Jake Butwin felt he was in a slump prior to yesterday's Nassau Class B boys soccer final between Wheatley and Carle Place at Adelphi. Butwin, Wheatley's leading goal scorer, hadn't scored in two games, but it did not take long for him to change that. He scored twice in the first 10 minutes to lead the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory and the county championship.

"It feels nice to come out of [a slump]," Butwin said, "especially two goals in this situation against this kind of team."

Butwin put Wheatley on the board in the sixth minute when he dribbled from the left to the middle of the box and shot the ball past Carle Place's Stephen Laurino. Less than five minutes later Butwin went down the left side and deked a defender before firing in his second goal.

"[Butwin's] done it all year, he's our best player, the best player in the conference, probably one of the best players in the state and he showed it today," Wheatley coach Steve Cadet said.

Carle Place scored in the 50th minute when Stephen Browne netted the rebound of his own penalty kick.

Wheatley (11-3-2) will play the winner of Mattituck and Center Moriches in the Long Island Class B championship on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Diamond in the Pines.
