When Glenn and Amityville’s boys soccer teams met in the regular season, 80 minutes wasn’t enough to decide a winner. So why would it be any different when the two met Friday night at Harborfields in the Suffolk Class A championship game?
Yet a winner had to be crowned, and when Anderson Hinke lined up to take one of his long throw-ins with 11:02 left in the second overtime period, the ball bounced in the box and was flicked over by James D’Angeli. It floated to the head of sophomore Nick Augustine.
“I’m in a panic,” Augustine said. “I just saw it, struck it and got lucky that it went in.”
Augustine’s header sealed a 3-2 win for No. 1 Glenn over No. 2 Amityville to win the Knights’ third consecutive county title. It’s Glenn’s first threepeat since 1990, 1991 and 1992.

“I’m just so happy for the kids, the community and the school,” Glenn coach Lou Hanner said. “There’s nothing like this. The kids that decide not to play or academies don’t let them play; you just can’t replicate this environment.”
Glenn (17-1) will face the winner of Nassau’s Locust Valley and Plainedge in the Long Island Class A championship game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Uniondale’s Mitchell Field.
Glenn’s David Palencia saved 10 shots, including three in overtime.
Amityville (14-5) played as tight a game as one can imagine, responding to Cian Daly’s opening goal in the 7th minute with a goal from Diego Martinez — scoring directly off a corner kick — with just 2:16 left in the first half.
“It took a few years to get here,” Amityville coach Mike Abbondondolo said. “I’m proud of all the work they put in to get here. It’s just unfortunate that it had to end the way it did.”
The second half was no less thrilling as Amityville’s Xavian Jackson ripped a 30-yard shot which went off the crossbar and in less than a minute after the opening kickoff.
Glenn’s Ethan Alkelai then matched Jackson’s long-range goal with one of his own as the team captain powered in a free kick from 38 yards out about six minutes later.

Augustine kneeled on the field after his goal, praying, across from Jack Ziminski with the two in astonishment at what just occurred.
“Amityville played really well,” Augustine said. “Just getting the winner felt so nice with the fans and everyone here. The environment was crazy.”
