Hat trick for Matthew McDonnell in Smithtown West's semifinal boys soccer win over Brentwood
Sophomore Matthew McDonnell scored all three goals for Smithtown West, including the winner with four seconds left in the first overtime, to lift the top-seeded Bulls over No. 4 Brentwood, 3-2, in a Suffolk Class AA boys soccer semifinal yesterday.
McDonnell's winner came off a throw-in from Garrett Sweeney at the top of the box.
With Smithtown West trailing Brentwood 1-0, McDonnell tied it off a cross from Chris Hettler 15 minutes into the second half. Ever Torres gave Brentwood a 2-1 lead a short time later, but McDonnell tied it again with 2:40 left in the half off another feed from Hettler to force overtime.
Smithtown West (18-0-1) will face No. 3 Central Islip (16-2) in the final on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Dowling. Brentwood finishes 15-4.
Sayville 1, Miller Place 0: Cory Santangelo scored the winner with 5:20 left to lead No. 1 Sayville over No. 4 Miller Place in a Class A semifinal. Sayville (16-1-1) will play No. 3 Glenn in the final on Thursday at 4 at Dowling. Sayville's defense was led by defenders Kyle Steck, Michael Farese and Justin Siracusa and goalkeeper Alex Spaun, who made six saves and recorded his 11th shutout.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRYCenter Moriches' Ryleigh Donegan took first in 20 minutes, 52.14 seconds in the Suffolk Class C state qualifier on Saturday at Sunken Meadow State Park. Teammate Diana Monaco, who finished in sixth in 22:51, also qualified for Saturday's state championship at Queensbury High School.
Melanie Pfenning (21:02.99) finished second as Mattituck won the Class C team title.
Stony Brook's Margot Rashba (21:33.74) won the Class D state qualifier. Teammates Clara Walker (22:40.81), Miranda Harrigan (23:49.74) and Anna Brummeler (24:14.36) finished second, fourth and seventh, respectively, for Stony Brook, which won the Class D race.
GIRLS TENNISShoreham-Wading River's Aimee Manfredo fell, 6-4, 6-1, to Olga Ostrovetsky of Wallkill to finish fourth at the individual state championships.
Manfredo advanced further than any other Long Island player at the tournament, reaching the semifinal round on Sunday, where she lost to eventual state runner-up Sabrina Barisano of the Ursuline School.
