Lawrence boys soccer can score in bunches and that was clear Friday afternoon.
The Golden Tornado scored four goals in a nine-minute span in the second half in its 4-1 win over visiting Wantagh in a Nassau A-II game. Liam Ireland scored to give Wantagh the lead in the first half, before Mauricio Puerto-Quintanilla scored in the 49th and 50th minutes to put Lawrence ahead.
Darwin Reyes scored five minutes later to double the advantage before his brother Danny made it 4-1 in the 58th minute.
“It’s an 80-minute game and they kept plugging away,” Lawrence coach Patrick Leary said. “Wantagh defended us well in the first half. That’s a tough side. But we’ve been scoring in bunches and once we got rolling, we put four goals in the net.”
The win brings Lawrence’s record to 5-0 in conference play and 5-0-1 overall. Leary’s squad is averaging 4.3 goals per game and conceding just 1.3.
Puerto-Quintanilla, who now has 12 goals and four assists this season, has been a big part of this offensive surge.
“He’s very talented, he has a good nose for the goal and has some teammates that can feed him the ball,” his coach said.
Wantagh dropped to 2-2.
Leary also said Lawrence’s defense has been essential to the team’s strong start.
“My backs are all upperclassmen. It’s a foundation defensively that allows the offensive players to do their thing,” he said. “If we can keep teams at zero, they will have a hard time keeping us at zero.”
