Upsets in Suffolk Class B soccer
Mattituck came into the Suffolk Class B semifinals as the No. 4 seed and had to face unbeaten Southampton, which they lost to twice during the regular season. The defending Suffolk Class B champions will defend their championship after a 2-1 win over top-seeded Southamtpon today.
David Burkhardt scored on a free kick from 30 yards with 20 minutes left in the second half for Mattituck (10-6-1). Stephen Urwand assisted Shawn Smiley for a score to give Mattituck a 1-0 lead in the first half.
Yahir Tarron scored off a pass from Matias Ruiz five minutes into the second half to tie the score at 1 for Southampton.
Mattituck plays No.3 Center Moriches in a rematch of last season's championship game in the final at 5 p.m. Saturday at Diamond in the Pines.
Center Moriches advanced with a 3-0 win over No. 2 Hampton Bays. Sophomore Kevin O'Brien scored from 45 yards on a direct free kick six minutes into the game for Center Moriches. O'Brien scored his second goal later in the half on a header from 15 yards off a throw-in from Nick Tyson to make it 2-0. Jake Sweeney capped the scoring on a penalty kick six minutes into the second half. Jason Albert had six saves, including a stop on a penalty kick to preserve a 2-0 lead.
