Walt Whitman's Michael Lorello had already reached the highest possible point of his senior season with a state championship, but a couple of more goals couldn't hurt.

Lorello, playing for Suffolk in the second Exceptional Seniors All-Star game of the day, scored twice in the first half in a 3-0 win over Nassau. He took home the team's Most Valuable Player award to cap his high school career Saturday at Diamond in the Pines in Coram.

"To come out a state champion and MVP of this game to end my senior year is something I'll never forget," Lorello said.

Lorello opened the scoring for Suffolk with a shot from the left side of the goal after getting a short pass from Christian Villalta with 28 minutes left in the half. His next score came when he stopped the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, planted his foot and sent a shot into the lower left corner of the net.

"I hit it on [the keeper] earlier and it went over the bar," Lorello said. "I saw he was leaning a little bit far to the right, so I put it on the far post and snuck it in."

Lorello played in the midfield alongside Brentwood's Jefferson Portillo, who efficiently moved the ball forward for his teammate. The two faced off in the Suffolk final and found themselves standing alongside each other for one game.

"I was really looking forward to playing with him, honestly," Portillo said. "He's a great player and it was fun to play with him in the middle."

Central Islip's Rances Reneau put in the last goal to solidify Suffolk's win with seven minutes left. Witman Hernandez from Walt Whitman created the scoring chance.

Arcel Kabongo Ngoy was named Nassau's MVP for the game.

In the first exceptional senior game, Commack's Anthony Izzo converted his third opportunity of the half with a shot over the head of the keeper in the 28th minute to give Suffolk a 2-1 win over Nassau.

He had put a shot off the crossbar moments earlier and then had a ball cleared at the goal line on the next play.

"It was getting unlucky," Izzo said. "In my mind. I'm like 'all right, one's got to go in soon.' "

The next one went over the keeper's head and into the net from the left side after a pass from Southampton's Jesse Scanlon.

Scanlon assisted on both of Suffolk's goals. He took the ball up the sideline and crossed to Huntington's Carlos Rivera 1:49 into the game to give Suffolk the lead.

Great Neck South's Ryan Lang, who was awarded Nassau's MVP, answered with 35 minutes remaining in the second half for Nassau to tie the game before Izzo's winner.

"We played possession, but then when we saw opportunities, we pushed it," Scanlon said.

Sachem East's Stephen Turnbull won MVP for Suffolk with passing contributions on both ends of the field while playing midfield.

"Staying organized is important, but when it's too close of a game, and it's a big game, you're just running all over the place doing what I can," Turnbull said.
