Nadel, Nerud, Donohue take girls race
The North Shore girls cross country squad had one objective at the state championships at Vernon-Verona Sherrill High School Saturday: win.
The Vikings achieved it in effortless fashion as Samantha Nadel, Brianna Nerud and Jessica Donohue swept the top three places to lift North Shore to the Class B championship.
It is the second straight state championship for North Shore (33 points), which beat out Burnt Hills (82) and Honeoye Falls (99).
"We were obviously very happy," said Nadel, who took first in the 5k race in 19:25.5. "Our goal was to win."
Nerud finished in 19:45.9 and Donohue was third in 20:01.7. Elizabeth Caldwell and Alexandra Osman took 10th and 38th.
Other top Class B finishers were Miller Place twins Talia and Tiana Guevara, who took sixth and 11th, Manhasset's Mary Welsh with a 12th-place finish and Bayport-Blue Point's Katie Saroka, who finished 13th.
Garden City's sister act of Jen and Stephanie Gerland finished 21st and 30th.
In Class A Sachem East's Rachel Paul took ninth in 20:03.2, Ward Melville's Carolina O'Hea, Courtney Williams and Juliana Marcucci finished 18th, 19th and 22nd and Northport's Brigid Brennan took 23rd.
Kelsey Margey of Friends Academy took third in Class C and Southold's Colette Steeke took 31st in the Class D race.
In boys races, Hauppauge's Ryan Colabella, Whitman's Michael Damato and Taylor Titcomb of Port Washington finished 13th, 17th and 31st in Class A.
Bayport-Blue Point's Adam LaFemina (12), Manhasset's Stephen Bourguet (14) and Shoreham-Wading River's John Lee (30) were the top Long Island finishers in Class B, while Port Washington's James Burke took 26th in the Class C race.
