East Islip strikes while Ward Melville snowed out

Outstanding performances on a consistent basis make the Redmen the new No. 1 in the BIG 10. The Redmen continued their undefeated season with wins against Central Islip and Connetquot, paced by Justin Orobello, who rolled a 279, and Jon Kavanaugh, who bowled a 278. The defending Suffolk champions boast a county-high team average of 1,100.53 -- more than 40 pins better than the closest team.
2. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS FENCING
Both matches were postponed because of snow for first-place Ward Melville (8-0). The Patriots have won 182 consecutive matches and will be looking to win a 12th consecutive Long Island championship.
The T-Birds defeated Half Hollow Hills East, 66-9, to set up a winner-take-all meet for the Suffolk League II title Tuesday night at Lindenhurst. Junior Eddie Hart earned his 100th career victory with a win in the finals of the North Fork Invitational Tournament at Mattituck. The T-Birds have won six tournaments and are 11-0 in dual meets.
The Arrows (16-0) defeated Commack, 63-10, to clinch their third straight league title. Sachem East is 53-1 in dual meets over the last three seasons.
5. NORTHPORT BOYS TRACK
Northport won the Suffolk League II championship, scoring 92 points. The Tigers took the top three places in the 1,600. Mike Brannigan won in 4:34.46, followed by Jack McGowan and Justin Leopold.
6. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN BOYS BASKETBALL
Marvin Prochet has proved to be quite an addition. The transfer from Boys & Girls had 17 points and 12 rebounds in a win against Linden, a powerful New Jersey team. Prochet then grabbed 20 rebounds and scored 10 points Saturday in a convincing win against Brooklyn Collegiate as the Crusaders improved to 12-2.
The boys also had their matches postponed last week. They have won 102 straight matches and will be looking to win their seventh consecutive Long Island title.
8. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Crusaders used a second-half rally to beat Maryland powerhouse McDonogh, 51-48. Boogie Brozoski had 13 points and four assists, including a dish to Katie Lavelle for the go-ahead basket with 48 seconds left. The defending Federation Class A champs will be tested Sunday against the elite CHSAA team St. Mary's.
Bethpage clinched the Conference I title as senior captain Sarah Ciresi took first place with a 34.9 all-around score, including 9.0 on bars and 8.9 on beam, in a 165.40-153.45 win over Massapequa. The three-time defending county champions, who have one more regular-season match this week against Plainview, haven't lost a meet in more than two years.
How dominant are the Redmen? Their 1,068.9 average is second best . . . behind only the East Islip boys squad. Nichole Baione (743 series) and Olivia Lopera (726) were excellent as the Redmen topped Comsewogue to secure the League III title last week. East Islip will be the heavy favorite in Saturday's Suffolk championship tournament.
