High school sporting events across Long Island will be postponed Tuesday, due to the expected winter storm, per executive directors Tom Combs of Section XI and Patrick Pizzarelli of Section VIII.

“Track and fencing championships have been moved from tomorrow to Wednesday due to the impending snow storm,” Combs said. “Many schools will close as well, which will cancel many boys and girls basketball games.”

Pizzarelli confirmed that all high school sports will be postponed in Nassau on Tuesday. Both Long Island championships for track and fencing will remain at the same scheduled times and locations on Wednesday.

Long Island is expected to receive 4-8 inches of snow, with parts of Long Island potentially seeing up to a foot. Bryan Ramsey of the National Weather Service (NWS) in Upton told Newsday western Long Island could see even more snowfall.

The NWS has already declared a winter storm warning for Long Island between 4-6 a.m. on Tuesday, with a mix of rain and snow expected to begin Monday night before turning into snow early during prime commuting hours and continuing throughout the day. Temperatures are expected to drop to the mid-20s, with wind chill values residing in the low-20s.

Wind gusts could also reach up to 40 mph during the storm, with the south shores of Long Island being the most at-risk, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Great Neck, East Islip and Eastport-South Manor school districts are among many school districts that have already announced their closure for Tuesday due to the incoming inclement weather. St. John the Baptist, St. Mary’s, St. Dominic and St. Anthony’s High Schools will switch to remote learning.
