The start wasn’t great, but the Long Island field hockey team is trying to finish with a flourish at the Empire State Games.

Long Island defeated Adirondack, 5-4, in strokes yesterday afternoon and will face Hudson Valley Sunday at 11 a.m. for the gold medal.

Long Island’s Lauren Brennan had three saves, including one from close range in the first half, in regulation.

It was a rough beginning for Long Island, which rallied for three straight wins after falling, 4-0, to Hudson Valley on the opening day of the Empire State Games.

A win today would give Long Island its first gold in field hockey since 1999.
