H.S. field hockey beat: Miller Place's Moore dominant
Making their points
In describing how dominant Miller Place's Mary Moore has been, the name Courtney Baranek must be mentioned. The former West Babylon star led Long Island last year with 41 points - 12 more than anyone else - and Moore, already with 18, has the second half of the regular season and the playoffs with which to make a run at that mark.
There are other scorers having great seasons (Sayville's Olivia Cabral also has 18 points), but adding luster to Moore's feat is the fact that she shares the load with Brea Greene, who's fifth with 13. They're both aggressive shot-takers, but coexist beautifully.
"I've never had a team so great at scoring," said coach Alana LaMorte, whose squad has outscored opponents 40-5.
Garden City marches
Garden City is as scary and relentless as a horror movie villain - in a good way. Nothing seems to slow them down and, at the end, they're right there. Despite returning only three starters, the Trojans are 8-0. They've received great production from the usuals (Alex Bruno and Mikaela Rix), but others like Catherine Dickinson, Tara Mahon and Catherine McTiernan have emerged, ensuring they don't skip a beat.
Sharing the wealth
It requires a couple scrolls down the scoring leader board to find the Sachem East girls. The team is among the highest-scoring at more than four goals per game, but they go about it their way, stats be darned.
Katie Trombetta and Jillian Donodeo lead the way with 11 points (good for 19th), but at 6-1, the Flaming Arrows are way up in the Division I standings. It's a testament to their strong defense and a potluck offense with contributions from everyone, coach Tina Moon said.
