The Bayport-Blue Point field hockey team didn’t want the county championship feeling to be a one time thing.

On Thursday, the team proved it wouldn’t be. The top-seeded Phantoms defeated No. 3 Pierson/Bridgehampton/Ross, 2-1, at Eastport-South Manor to earn their second straight Suffolk Class C crown.

“I’m kind of at a loss for words right now,” coach Karen Gick said. “It’s so exciting. The fact that we were able to pull together and keep our heads in it the whole time, I’ll take it.”

The Phantoms (14-3) will next face Carle Place or Cold Spring Harbor in the Long Island championship at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Adelphi. Pierson/Bridgehampton/Ross finished 8-9.

Bayport-Blue Point got off to a quick start, earning a penalty corner less than three minutes into play. Kate Baillargeon sent a drive from the top of the circle to Madeline Clark, who deflected the ball into the cage.

Only three minutes later, the Phantoms extended the lead. On another penalty corner, Lily LiPuma sent a pass to Baillargeon for a goal of her own.

“I’m super excited,” Baillargeon said. “We came into this game super pumped and ready to get a second county championship, and I think we all left everything we had on the field and played really great.”

Pierson/Bridgehampton/Ross found some life in the second frame. With less than two minutes remaining in the half, Lola Edgridge found the goal in the middle of a scrum to cut the lead to one.

But the Phantoms’ defense settled in. Camryn Bruckner made a game-changing defensive save early in the match to keep the momentum in Bayport-Blue Point’s direction.

“I was so pumped,” Bruckner said. “I also have full faith that if I wasn’t there, our goalie would be. I was so hyped to be there and keep them from scoring on that play.”
