Hollie Schleicher said she used to be the inserter on penalty corners, but the Pierson/Bridgehampton freshman has been in the trapper role for the last two games.

It didn't take her long to adjust.

Schleicher received the ball on a corner six minutes into the game against Port Jefferson and wound up for a low and powerful shot that found the back of the cage.

It was the first of many goals for Pierson/BH, which earned the Suffolk Class C field hockey championship with a 6-0 win over Port Jefferson Thursday at the Dowling Athletic Complex in Shirley.

"Get the ball, hit the ball, get it in the goal," said Schleicher, who had another goal in the second half. "Not being afraid to take the shot is really important and thinking quick on your feet. If you have the space, take it and if you don't, pass it off."

Port Jefferson went on the attack first and quickly found its way down field to the 20-yard line but was stopped short of taking a shot on multiple occasions.

Pierson dominated the offense for 15 minutes after Schleicher's goal and adapted defensively when Port Jefferson switched from short passes on the ground to long lobs in the air.

Port Jeff goalie Anna Cerullo saved three consecutive corners within the final four minutes of the first half, but couldn't keep Pierson at bay in the second. Calista Cafiero scored the first of her two goals to open the second half. Schleicher had an unassisted goal with 8:12 left in regulation and Ana Sherwood also scored two goals.

"We started off slow, but towards the end we were able to put [goals] in one after another," Pierson coach Bethany Semlear said. "We played great as a unit today. Passing in particular was exceptional, especially in the second half, and that's what we've been working on all season."
