Winning the program’s first county championship: “It’s amazing. All our hard work finally paid off. It just feels great. This is always our hardest game. We lost to [Ward Melville] 1-0 in this game last year. This felt like a repeat of last year, except we wanted to make sure the score was different and in our favor this time.”

Losing in overtime of the final last year: “It was a terrible feeling. We were so close and we knew were losing 14 seniors from that team, so it was tough to deal with.”

Difference in this year’s team: “All of us from last year, we knew how it felt and that helped push us. That pushed us to work harder in practice to make sure we got our county title.”

Two 4-0 wins over Ward Melville in the regular season and then a 5-0 win in the final. What does that say about your team? “It just shows that we really are the team everyone said we were. We wanted to prove that we really are No. 1 and we deserve it.”

What does winning Sachem East’s first county title mean to you? “I don’t know where to begin. There are so many athletes I’ve had in the last 12 years that came through Sachem, every one of them has a piece of this. This is for them. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Losing 14 seniors but going 18-1 and winning a title: “Two years prior, we lost another set of 14. We had 18 new players on last year’s team and that group formed a good nucleus and they instilled a winning attitude. We’ve built from that.”

Sachem East has a relatively young roster with a core that includes several returning players: “I’m excited. They’re athletic and they’re hard workers. They want to do well and keep forging ahead. It was also good that we were able to get as many kids in the game and get them that experience. It’s something they’ll remember of the rest of their lives.”

Was last year’s loss in your thoughts going into or during this game? “I’m a competitor, so of course it was in my mind. We wanted this bad… We’re on a mission. We want it. We’ll enjoy this [Thursday night], but then we get focused. We want to win it all.”

Katie Doherty scored wo goals put Sachem East up, 3-0, before halftime.

Beating Ward Melville so decisively: "It’s so great. It’s something that we worked hard for and we did it. We came to win, and that’s all we wanted to do."

The celebratory dogpile at the 35-yard line after the final whistle: "We went out and just jumped on top of each other… I was one of the ones on top. I didn’t want to get crushed on the bottom."

Having beaten Ward Melville twice in the regular season, how confident was the team going into the final? “We had a lot of confidence but we couldn’t come in overconfident and act like we can’t lose. You always have to remember that they’re a good team.”

Thoughts during the second half with a big lead: “You just want to keep going. You don’t want to think, ‘Oh, it’s 3-0, we’ve got it,’ because if there’s time on the clock a team can always come back. You can’t let up until it’s over.”
