Can Lindenhurst keep rolling against unbeaten Floyd?
The seventh week of the high school football season offers only one game that features two teams with 6-0 records. Floyd will travel to play Lindenhurst at 6 p.m. Friday in a Suffolk I game with the top seed in the postseason on the line.
The showdown comes on the heels of Lindenhurst’s 37-0 thrashing of Longwood, the third loss in a row for Long Island’s Class I defending champions. The dominant win erased any doubt that Lindenhurst was a formidable contender for the crown.
“This is just a brutal part of our schedule and we need to stay healthy to get through it,” Lindenhurst coach Nick Lombardo said. “Our guys knew what was on the line last week and they know what’s on the line this week. I really like the way our defense is playing and we have to tighten up a few things on offense.”
Lombardo was noncommittal regarding any predictions for this week other than his team would be ready for a very physical game against a team that has been the standard for excellence in the division.
“There’s a tremendous amount of respect for the Floyd program here in Lindenhurst,” Lombardo said. “There’s never a down year. When they come, they come to play.”
Lindenhurst has the stingiest defense in the division allowing a mere 47 points thus far. Floyd is also tough to score on. The Colonials have allowed 93 points behind the play of linebacker Michael Bradley.
The Colonials should be motivated for this one. Lindenhurst has beaten Floyd more than any other team in the division since 2008. During that span, Floyd has won four Suffolk titles. Lindenhurst ended Floyd’s 42-game winning streak in 2008. The Colonials have to pressure quarterback Austin Perri, who has multiple weapons in wide receivers Steve Ramirez, Jeremy Ruckert and halfback Andy Merkerson. This game could be decided in the final seconds by a foot.
In other games:
Mepham at Elmont, Saturday, 2:30 p.m.: It’s a Nassau III slugfest that will have a bearing on the seeding in the postseason. Mepham (4-2) has been in two consecutive shootouts, splitting those two games and the Pirates should expect another one in Elmont (4-2). The Spartans have quarterback Aaron Ruthman, who has 1,715 yards passing and 21 touchdown passes. Mepham will counter with halfback Michael Valentino, who has 969 yards rushing and 17 scores. Inclement weather is expected.
Port Jefferson at Greenport/Southold, Friday, 7 p.m.: The Royals are playoff-bound, having won three in a row, including a 38-34 win over once-beaten Wyandanch. This Suffolk IV game carries playoff implications for home field advantage for Port Jefferson and a spot in the postseason for Greenport. Port Jefferson has shut out Greenport two years in a row.
Connetquot at Ward Melville, Friday, 6 p.m.: An interesting matchup in Suffolk I dictated by the play of both quarterbacks. Ward Melville (2-4) has QB Wesley Manning, who has been consistent with wide receivers Jon Corpac and Ed Munoz. The Patriots defense, however, has not played well. Connetquot (4-2) has QB Dylan McDermott, who has emerged as a playmaker for the Thunderbirds.
Glenn at Babylon, Friday, 6 p.m.: This is a long-standing Suffolk IV rivalry. Both teams have taken down Shoreham-Wading River, the two-time defending Class IV champions. Babylon (6-0) has allowed 74 points and Glenn (5-1) only 78 through six games. They are the two highest scoring teams in the division with Babylon averaging 39 points per game and Glenn 34. Statistically, it’s about as close as it can get.
Baldwin at East Meadow, Saturday, 2 p.m.: Two teams that are 3-3 and battling for a higher seed in the postseason. East Meadow QB Anthony LaRosa has thrown for six scores and run for seven more heading into this Nassau I game. Baldwin halfback Johnathan DeBique has 632 yards rushing and eight scores. Baldwin lost a 21-20 heartbreaker to Massapequa a week ago.
