Look around the CHSFL this season and you will likely see a lot of teams driving behind their driving force — the quarterback.
“I think we’ve got some really good quarterbacks in this league,” Chaminade coach Kevin Dolan said. “… And in this new spread world … the world is now quarterback driven. Everybody’s trying to throw it all over the lot.”
Dolan is enthused over his guy, senior Matthew Dieguez, who’s Fordham-bound for baseball. St. Anthony’s coach Joe Minucci is enthused over his guy, senior Dante Torres, who’s a Fordham commit for football.
“I would find it hard to believe that there’s many offenses in New York State with some of the talent that (we have),” Minucci said. “Our quarterback can get the ball all over the field from sideline to sideline, down the field, with good accuracy and good arm strength.
“And (he’s) surrounded by a lot of weapons, a lot of guys that are going to be playing college football at a high level over the next year or two. … I think we’re in a great position to compete for a Triple-A championship.”
Kellenberg, under new head coach Eric Meisse, has Penn-bound senior QB Devin Page. St. John the Baptist coach Philip Alba is excited about his dual threat who transferred from Roslyn, junior Michael Wheat.
Holy Trinity had senior Zion Woodhull-Trippet and junior Rocco Rainone vying in the preseason to be No. 1 after sharing time during last season’s 10-0, AA II championship run. The Titans will be after the AA I championship this time, with returning starters at 18 spots.
Chaminade returns 14 starters. The Flyers missed the AAA playoffs, then went down to the AA I tournament and took the title.
There has since been a format change. Teams are locked into their groupings for the postseason.
