Faison, Caldwell lead Elmont past Mepham
Clinging to a seven-point lead, No. 3 Elmont forced a four-and-out on No. 6 Mepham's final possession to seal a 14-7 win in the Nassau II quarterfinals Saturday. Will Faison was 8-for-19 for 91 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a score for Elmont (6-3). Quasarn Caldwell ran for 121 yards on 26 carries. Elmont plays No. 2 Wantagh at 7 p.m. Friday at Hofstra in the semifinals. Mepham finished 4-5.
Wantagh 40, New Hyde Park 7: Nick Mullen was 7-for-8 for 202 yards and four TDs to lead No. 2 Wantagh (8-1) over No. 7 New Hyde Park (5-4). Brian VonBargen had 184 yards and three TDs on five catches and also ran for 36 yards and a TD. Wantagh plays No. 3 Elmont at 7 p.m. Friday at Hofstra in the semifinals.
Garden City 42, Bellmore JFK 7: Mark Ellis had 115 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries as No. 1 Garden City (9-0) beat No. 8 Bellmore JFK (5-3). Garden City scored on its first four possessions, including Rob Savage's 26-yard fumble recovery for a TD that gave the Trojans a 28-0 lead. Patric Berkery returned from a back injury after a five-week absence and caught a 27-yard TD pass from Brett Stewart. Berkery had 48 rushing yards on just four carries, all in the first half. Bellmore JFK quarterback Chris Racalbuto was 10-for-17 for 100 yards and scored a rushing TD. Garden City plays No. 4 Carey at 4 p.m. Friday at Hofstra in the semifinals.
