Team Sicoli creates some breathing room in high school fantasy football league
After five weeks of tight competition, Team Sicoli (1,091) has created some breathing room at the top of the Newsday High School Fantasy Football League standings.
Three other teams have topped the 1,000-point mark, with Team Slawson (1,064) in second. Team Sarra (1,050) and Team Matias (1,014) round out the top four.
“Well, it feels right,” Michael Sicoli said. “[Brentwood's] Cris Peralta has put up over 100 fantasy points these past two weeks, and Ryan Leary of Carle Place has been great. Overall, it’s getting more competitive each week in the office and just a good time.”
Once again, Peralta had another stellar week, leading all players with 61 points in Brentwood’s win. New addition Leary contributed 26 points in Team Sicoli’s 250-point effort in Week 5.
The highest-scoring team in Week 5 was Team Kellman. A breakout week was needed, and Kellman’s roster delivered with 272 points. Commack quarterback Lincoln Riggs connected with wide receiver Mason Ruocco for three touchdowns and the pair combined for 101 fantasy points.
Injuries made Ruocco key for Commack — and he delivered.
“Ruocco had to replace James Brusca, our top skill player who is out for the season,” Commack coach Joe Reggio said. “Ruocco is a kid with good football sense. He’s tall, runs precise routes, and had a great day [last week] — a lot of his catches were big plays.
“And Lincoln is a smart kid, a great leader, and because of his speed he can make plays when things break down. Both of them have been friends for quite a while. They’re really good athletes and good kids.”
Team Ferguson (975) sits in fifth after posting its best week (237). Hauppauge running back Liam O’Connor and Massapequa quarterback Luke Garguilo combined for 92 points.
Long Island Lutheran wide receiver Kameron Roy has also been a steady performer, surpassing 100 receiving yards and scoring a touchdown last game.
“Kam is one of the most selfless players I’ve ever coached,” LuHi coach Tiquan Garner said. “Whether he’s catching the ball or blocking downfield for his teammates, he’s effective and selfless.”
Team Lindsay (958) has been boosted by Clarke quarterback Matt Kurz, who scored 52 points last week and has helped Clarke to its best start through five games since 2021 (4-1).
Team Sarra has entered the top three with another consistent performance, marking its fourth straight week scoring more than 200 points. Smithtown West quarterback Nick DeVito had a breakout week, collecting 34 points.
“This fantasy concept has really played out in such a positive manner within our staff,” Gregg Sarra said. “It has created more awareness of players throughout Long Island and has helped us engage with the football community. It’s really been a healthy and fun outlet, and it’s pretty cool to have a group of players that play well consistently every week.”
