Matt Selts is known for how well he rushes the ball. But it's the way the Sayville running back pass blocks that makes him a complete back.

Selts said he's just following the lead of his offensive linemen.

"I try to stay back there and pick him up," Selts said. "He doesn't hold on to the ball that long. I just do whatever I've got to do to help out Jack. I just try to stay in there, hit them, and let him do his thing."

Jack Coan is certainly the beneficiary of all that blocking. The Golden Flashes sophomore quarterback put on quite a show during Sayville's 56-20 home win Thursday over Miller Place in Suffolk III.

Coan completed 13 of 25 passes for 350 yards and five touchdowns as the Golden Flashes improved to 4-0.

"We haven't let up a sack yet," said Selts, who rushed for 204 yards on 22 carries and two TDs. "I'm happy with the way our line is playing right now. I mean, when it comes to pass blocking, I have been picking up some linebackers, but I wouldn't take all the credit."

Coan agreed with his backfield mate that all the credit goes to the big boys up front. "It was a complete team effort," Coan said. "My linemen were holding up upfront completely. I'd say we have one of the best lines on the Island. We also have an unbelievable group of receivers, too."

On this night, the receiving core was led by Kevin Murphy. Murphy's 44-yard scoring reception from Coan with 8:47 remaining until halftime gave Sayville a 28-7 lead following Jason Intermesoli's extra point.

Murphy had four receptions for 152 yards and three scores. The Golden Flashes put up 35 points in the second quarter.

"When it's time for Matt to run it, he runs it. When it's time for Jack to pass it, he passes it," Sayville coach Rob Hoss said. "This is a big win for us, a good win against a real quality opponent. We're just going to try to keep getting better from this point on."

"Right away, you'll see teams stack the box, and when that happens, it opens up the passing game for me," Coan said. "Definitely having Matt back there makes my job a lot easier. In the first half, we had a lot more passing. Again, they were trying to stop Matt and that was opening up our receivers."
