Matt Varian's 20-yard TD run lifts Long Beach in overtime

Quarterback Matt Varian's 20-yard touchdown run was the winner in overtime as Long Beach edged Jericho, 12-6, Saturday in Nassau II football.

Varian ran for 150 yards and two TDs on 16 carries. His 12-yard score tied it at 6 with three minutes left in regulation.

"Balls were loose all over and it was a very sloppy game due to the weather," Marines coach Scott Martin said. "But [Varian] protected the ball and came up big when we needed it."

Nick Nigro (seven tackles) made a stop at the 13 on Jericho's opening possession of overtime to keep the Jayhawks from scoring.

"It was a game-saving tackle," Martin said.

Tyreek Bromley ran for 40 yards for Long Beach.

Garden City 16, Elmont 0: Brian Haeffner ran for 81 yards and a touchdown for Garden City. Garden City got on the board with a safety in the first quarter, then Justin Samardich's 17-yard TD made it 9-0 in the third.

The Trojans allowed only five first downs.

Westbury 42, Bellmore JFK 12: Raeco Jackson was 12-for-15 for 232 yards and two touchdowns to lead Westbury. Jackson found Kyle Spruill off a play-action pass on a go route for a 35-yard TD to put Westbury up 13-6 in the second. Shalike Merchant ran for 110 yards and two TDs.Carey 33, Mepham 7: Nick Spillane ran for 47 yards and scored twice and had an interception, and Conor Colusardo rushed for 104 yards and TD to lead Carey.

Michael Catanese threw for 125 yards and ran for 63 yards and a TD. Michael De Leo ran for 75 yards and a touchdown, and Anthony Millan had an interception.

Sewanhaka 27, Calhoun 7: Elijah Tracy completed 5 of 5 passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 95 yards and a TD to lead Sewanhaka.

Brenton Mighty rushed for 136 yards and a score on 17 carries. Tracy scored an 85-yard TD on the Indians' opening drive and, on their next possession, Mighty had a 73-yard TD run.

Vladimir Cange made 11 tackles, Adrian Harris had nine stops and Adly Dacius-Slater had an interception in the first half.

Wantagh 35, New Hyde Park 12: Vinny Vasheo ran for 101 yards and a touchdown and also scored on a punt return and kickoff return to lead Wantagh.

Vasheo's 65-yard TD on a punt return gave the Warriors a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. He returned a kickoff 90 yards for a TD in the second quarter.

Dylan Beckwith had an 85-yard TD on a kick return and also snagged an interception.

Bruno Surace ran for 37 yards and a touchdown and Rob Tucker was 5-for-7 passing for 70 yards and ran once for 10 yards.
