Hewlett offensive guard/defensive end Niv Sultan has been selected as the Jules D. Mazor Outstanding Jewish High School Scholar Athlete. The award is given to the most deserving Jewish male in the nation.

Sultan, dubbed the "Hebrew Hammer" during football season for his penchant for big hits, was a first team All Long Island selection. The Harvard-bound, 6-4, 260-pounder made 88 tackles with five sacks this past season for the 7-3 Bulldogs.

"The fact that the award could have been granted to someone from anywhere in the country really makes me appreciate the fact that it has been given to me," Sultan said. "To know that I beat out a lot of worthy competitors makes the victory much more rewarding."

Sultan was the 2010 Jay Fiedler Top Scholar Athlete award winner in Nassau County. He scored a 1,400 on the math and verbal portion of the SATs and will graduate with a 96 unweighted grade-point average.

"As good of a football player and student that Niv is, he is a better person," said Hewlett coach Jay Iaquinta. "Niv always strives to do the right thing even if no one is watching."

The award will be presented on March 27 by the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame & Museum at the Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center in Commack. It is open to the public.
