Patrick Coan always found a way to win.

Whether it was on the ground or through the air, Coan made the big plays all season. He accounted for 3,019 all-purpose yards and 38 touchdowns to lead the Golden Flashes to the Long Island Class III championship.

“We couldn’t have done it without him,” Sayville coach Rob Hoss said. “He was a true leader, confident in his team, talented and a super tough kid. I truly believe he etched his own legacy in Sayville football lore.”

For his accomplishments, Coan was named the recipient of the Boomer Esiason Award, presented to Suffolk’s top quarterback, at the Suffolk County Football Coaches Association dinner Monday night at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge.

The Lehigh commit led Sayville to a 12-0 season, punctuated by a 42-35 win over Wantagh in the Long Island Class III championship game. He saved his best day of rushing for the title game with 229 yards, including a 64-yard TD run.

“It was a back-and-forth game, and Patrick broke that huge TD run,” Hoss said.

Coan went around the right end and seemingly hit another gear on his way to a 64-yard TD run to tie the score with Wantagh at 28 in the third quarter.

“He had key plays like that one all season,” Hoss said. “He was a dual threat to either run with it or throw it.”

Coan rushed 133 times for 1,082 yards and 13 TDs. He completed 133 of 178 passes for 1,937 yards and 25 TDs with three interceptions.

In the Suffolk Division III final, Coan completed 9 of 12 passes for 177 yards and three scores in a 34-7 win over Smithtown West.

Sayville trailed late in the second half of four games this season. Unusual, yes.

But it didn’t matter — they had Patrick Coan.
