Rigo's pick after losing fumble seals it
With his team protecting a three-point lead with 1:10 remaining, East Islip's Tyler Rigo fumbled on the Half Hollow Hills West 35. But he redeemed himself, intercepting a pass on the ensuing play to seal his team's 27-24 win over No. 7 Hills West in the Suffolk II quarterfinals Saturday.
The No. 2 Redmen (7-2) rallied from a 17-13 halftime deficit. Pete Hanabergh's 7-yard touchdown created the final margin with 1:12 left in the third. Hanabergh went 17-for-21 for 225 yards, and ran for 74 yards and two scores. Rigo had two TDs, and Kyle Moller had eight catches for 157 yards. Jake Klose was 23-for-33 for 300 yards and three TDs, and Deven Williams had seven receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown for Hills West (4-5). East Islip will host No. 3 North Babylon in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Newfield 49, Riverhead 19:Julian Santiago ran for 203 yards and two TDs and Mike Silva rushed for 197 yards and two TDs as No. 5 Newfield (6-3) beat No. 4 Riverhead (6-3) in a Suffolk II quarterfinal. Zach Powell (67 yards), Joe Feliciano (61) and Rob Denig (47) each had a touchdown and contributed to the Wolverines' 563 yards. Santiago had eight tackles and James Manginelli had six. Charles Bartlett had 150 yards and a touchdown, and returned a fumble 99 yards for a score to lead Riverhead. Newfield will visit West Babylon at 1 p.m. Saturday.
West Babylon 28, Whitman 12: Reggie Robinson ran for 152 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries to lead No. 1 West Babylon (8-1) in the Suffolk II quarterfinals Friday night. Unique Ford added 105 yards and a score on 14 carries. Robinson also had nine tackles and two sacks. Gary Green had six tackles and two sacks and Mike Kata had eight tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Whitman finished 4-5.
