Rob Johnson has big game on senior day as Bayport-Blue Point wins
It was senior day at Bayport-Blue Point yesterday, an appropriate setting for Rob Johnson to have a big game.
The Phantoms' senior quarterback competed 16 of 19 passes for 226 yards and four touchdowns and also ran for a score in Bayport Blue-Point's 41-0 victory over Hampton Bays in Suffolk IV.
"We were able to read the defense well and when they went to blitz us, I was able to throw the ball over the top and our receivers were able to make a ton of good plays" Johnson said.
Johnson's first touchdown came with 10:51 left in the second quarter when he connected with senior receiver Anthony DeNicola for a 9-yard score. Johnson and DeNicola connected again for a 4-yard touchdown less than four minutes later to put the Phantoms up 20-0.
The Phantoms put the game out of reach with a 34-point explosion in the second quarter.
"We knew going into the season we would have to rely on Johnson to win us games," said coach Eric Iberger. "He has the dual threat ability to beat you with his arm and his feet which you saw out there today."
Johnson connected with Vince Lombardi on a 4-yard touchdown with 4 minutes left in the half. Johnson capped off his performance with his fourth touchdown pass, a nice 60-yard pass-and-run hookup with Ka'Sean Watlington.
Johnson added an 8-yard touchdown run in the closing seconds of the first half.
With major playoff implications and a first round home game hanging in the balance, Bayport Blue Point shined, and the victory kept them as the No. 4 seed entering the final week of the regular season. Hampton Bays is 3-4.
"We met our goal of beating a formidable team today," said Iberger. "We will enjoy this victory, but now our attention turns to beating Port Jeff. next week to secure that first round home playoff game."
