Week 2 was a wacky one, with games being played on various days because of the Jewish holiday and the rain and lightning that struck Long Island on Thursday night. No changes at the top, but there was some expected early-season reshuffling of the deck in Suffolk.
Again, I remind readers that these rankings are strictly my opinion and are posted with the hope they will generate interest and conversation about high school football. They are not official and have no bearing on the weekly coaches’ power ratings that eventually determine playoff seeds.
Zog’s Top 10
1. Sachem North (2-0). Mike Andreassi and Jesse Scanna (pictured) led a rushing attack that piled up 276 yards in the Flaming Arrows’ 34-15 victory over Lindenhurst. Up next: Hosts Brentwood on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
2. St. Anthony’s (2-0). Quarterback Charlie Raffa once again ran the triple-option beautifully in the Friars’ 28-14 victory over Holy Cross. Up next: Visits Farrell on Friday night at 7 o’clock.
3. North Babylon (2-0). Preshod McCoy scored four touchdowns — on runs of 3, 20, 3 and 14 yards — as the Bulldogs defeated Half Hollow Hills West, 35-21. Up next: Visits Smithtown West on Friday night at 6 p.m.
4. Floyd (2-0). Stacey Bedell rushed for 243 yards and three touchdowns — one on an 80-yard run — in the Colonials’ 40-12 victory over Northport. Up next: Hosts Central Islip on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
5. East Islip (2-0). Kevin Hutchinson kicked a 31-yard field goal and threw a touchdown pass to lead the Redmen to a tough 10-7 victory over Bellport. Up next: Hosts Newfield on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
6. Connetquot (2-0). Mike Pellegrino ran for 207 rans and two touchdowns in the Thunderbirds’ 26-13 victory over Brentwood. Up next: Visits Patchogue-Medford on Friday night at 6 p’clock.
7. Sayville (2-0). Running backs Tom Dieckhoff and John Haggart sparked a second-half rally as the Golden Flashes defeated Eastport-South Manor, 43-20. Up next: Visits Deer Park on Friday night at 6 p.m.
8. Islip (2-0). The Musketeers’ defense came up big and Alex Gavilia scored the first touchdown of his career in ta 7-6 victory over Amityville. Up next: Hosts Hauppauge on Friday night at 7 o’clock.
9. Lindenhurst (1-1). Steve Skon threw two touchdown passes but the Bulldogs’ defense couldn’t stop the run in a 34-15 loss to Sachem North. Up next: Hosts Sachem East on Saturday at 2 p.m.
10. Bayport-Blue Point (2-0). Jack Sheehan scored on a 17-yard run and the defense came up with a goal-line stand in the Phantoms’ 6-0 victory over Mt. Sinai. Up next: Visits Hampton Bays on Friday night at 7 o’clock.
