Brody Riedel jumpstarted an offensive explosion in the first half, then he and the rest of the Long Beach defense controlled the game in the second half.

And when Colin Donaghy forced a sack fumble and Christian Capria returned it to the 1-yard line, Riedel put the finishing touches on a dominant performance.

Riedel shook off a tackler behind the line of scrimmage and powered his way in for his second touchdown and the final score in host Long Beach’s 34-7 win over Mepham in Nassau Conference II football Friday night.

Riedel finished with 209 yards on 25 carries. He entered halftime with 11 carries for 161 yards and a TD.

It does not matter who lines up across from them: Hudson Philbrick and Joe Karpowicz are going to take the game over.

The two seniors connected on five passes for 99 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone to help lead host Ward Melville to a 33-14 win over Sachem North in East Setauket on Friday night. The Patriots (6-0) gained sole possession of first place in the Suffolk Division I.

Sachem North (5-1) entered with Suffolk I’s best scoring defense, allowing just 11.8 points per game, and tied atop the standings with Ward Melville. However, the quarterback-receiver connection between Philbrick and Karpowicz remained unstoppable.

Xavier Bala leads St. Anthony's to comeback win over Chaminade in wild finish

One of Long Island’s biggest rivalries delivered an instant classic Friday night.

Sophomore Aidyn Alston made a tackle, stopping a two-point conversion run with 38 seconds left as St. Anthony’s held on for a 49-48 win over Chaminade.

“It was definitely tears of joy,” Alston said. “That was God’s timing for me right there.”

“This rivalry is gonna go on forever,” he added. “I had to do it for the seniors, coaches and St. Anthony’s alumni.”

The Friars overcame a 27-14 deficit behind Boston College commit Xavier Bala.

He rushed for 212 yards and three touchdowns and added two catches for 70 receiving yards and a touchdown.

“He took over in the second half and played unbelievable,” St. Anthony’s coach Joe Minucci said. I think it’s fair to say that that’s his most dominant performance in four years here.”

St. Anthony’s quarterback Anthony Diieso threw for 206 yards and three scores. Rory McDermott caught three passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

Diieso’s 65-yard touchdown run put the Friars ahead 49-42 with 2:48 remaining. Chaminade's Sean Carnevale found Christian Birchi Trani for a 28-yard score with 38 seconds left, setting up Alston’s decisive stop.

“I was ecstatic,” McDermott said. “Just to have a game like that, as close as it was, and to pull it out, it was amazing. That was an awesome experience.”

Nick Moutsatsos, Dom Agovino lead Plainedge past previously unbeaten South Side

Nick Moutsatsos had his eyes on setting the tone as early as possible Friday night.

The Plainedge junior linebacker registered a tackle for loss on South Side’s second play from scrimmage. On the next play, he intercepted a pass. Dom Agovino followed immediately with a 10-yard touchdown run, and the Red Devils were just getting started.

Plainedge forced turnovers on South Side’s first three possessions and rolled to a 36-7 road win in Nassau III, handing the conference’s preseason No. 1 seed its first loss.

Moutsatsos' mindset from the opening kick?

“Just go straight for them," he said, "get the ball right away, get it back for offense in plus territory."

Riedel, Long Beach defense lifts Marines to win over Mepham

FINAL: Long Beach 34, Mepham 7

Brody Riedel had 25 carries for 209 yards and 2 TDs and the Long Beach defense forced five turnovers in the second half in a dominant win.

Plainedge hands South Side first loss

Ward Melville stays undefeated, hands Sachem North first loss

This one is over. Ward Melville remains atop Suffolk I with a 33-14 win over Sachem North.

Game story to come on the web tonight and in print on Sunday!

BBP cuts Sayville's lead to 19 with Waldbauer TD

Bayport quarterback Matt Bachmore goes play action and finds a wide open Brayden Waldbauer for the 2-yard TD pass on a slant pattern.

Sayville still leads 34-15 with 9:11 left in the fourth quarter.

Ward Melville takes 19-point lead into 4th quarter

No score in the third quarter. Ward Melville still leads it, 26-7.

Sachem North has the ball, 3rd-and-11 from its own 11-yard line to begin the fourth quarter.

Long Beach's Brody Riedel scores four first-half touchdowns

Brody Riedel is a big-play machine. The senior has 11 carries for 161 yards and a touchdown as host Long Beach leads Mepham, 27-7, at halftime. Riedel has broken runs of 69 and 35 yards. In the Marines’ 27-13 win over Mepham in last year’s Nassau II semifinal, Riedel rushed 22 times for 195 yards and four scores.

Brody Juan threw a 64-yard TD pass to Joe Henn and added a 5-yard TD run. Jaron Burns broke several tackles on his way to a 75-yard punt return score - his second punt-return TD in as many games.

Sayville marches to big halftime lead vs. BBP

Connor Batterberry is starting in place of halfback Tim Holahan and the Sayville Golden Flashes have not skipped a beat. Holahan is out with an undisclosed injury wearing a walking boot on his left foot but expected back soon. Batterberry rushed for 135 yards and a score in a first half that saw Sayville score on all four possessions to take a 34-9 halftime lead over Bayport-Blue Point. Four different offensive players have scored for Sayville and Cole Cantarella had a 71-yard interception return for a score.

This is lopsided, but Bayport-Blue Point is not outclassed. The Phantoms have moved the football and were the first to score against the Sayville defense this season through six games. The only other score against Sayville this season was a kickoff return for a score.

So how did Bayport-Blue Point score against Sayville? Well, it wasn't easy. The Phantoms drove 68 yards in 10 plays, before electric halfback Josh Franchak scored on a 4th down and 1 run. The anatomy of the TD march included a well-disguised fake punt where Ryan Kloss took the snap and ran for 6 yards and the first down. Franchak highlighted the drive with a 50-yard run to the Bayport 3.

Philbrick-Karpowicz connection gives Ward Melville halftime lead

We have reached halftime here.

Three touchdown passes from Philbrick to Karpowicz has Ward Melville leading Sachem North, 26-7.

Plainedge caps dominant first half with trick play

End of 2nd Quarter: Plainedge 22, South Side 0

Evan Vasquez with a 1-yard touchdown on a fullback dive on 4th and goal as time expired.

Agovino then found Mike Ranaudo on a fake extra point for a 2-point conversion to end the first half. Plainedge will get the ball to start the second half.

Philbrick hands Ward Melville early lead

At the end of one quarter, Ward Melville leads Sachem North, 14-7.

Hudson Philbrick has a touchdown pass and a touchdown rush in two possessions.

Plainedge holds 14-0 lead over South Side

End of 1st Quarter: Plainedge 14, South Side 0

The Red Devils have the ball at their own 40. This Plainedge defense has forced three turnovers in the first quarter. They’ve been fast and physical.

Plainedge capitalizes on Moutatsos' interception

Plainedge 7, South Side 0

Nick Moutsatsos with an INT, Dom Agovino rushed for a 10-yard TD on the next play. 10:22 left in the first quarter.

Ward Melville hosts Sachem North in battle of undefeated teams

5 carries, 2 tuddies for Sachem East's Pitocco

Sachem East kept its playoff hopes alive and well Thursday night, defeating Patchogue-Medford, 27-7, in a crucial Suffolk I matchup.

John Pitocco rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns on five carries, scoring on runs of 6 and 31 yards in the first half.

“We knew we had to go out there, make a statement early, and it all started with the defense,” Pitocco said. “If they can’t score, they can’t win.”

Sachem East held Patchogue-Medford scoreless through three quarters. Tommy Britton rushed for 93 yards, while Chase Reynolds added 64 yards and a touchdown.

“We were just getting a great push from the line,” Pitocco said. “It felt very nice to get that run game going.”

A loss would have likely forced Sachem East (3-3) to win out, with Floyd (3-2) still on the schedule or rely on a lot of help from others as seven of the 12 Division I teams have records between 2-3 and 3-3 heading into the rest of this weekend's games.

Sachem East faces another important matchup against Bay Shore next week, with the potential to clinch a playoff spot.

“It was pretty electric after the game,” Pitocco said. “But we have another huge game next week with Bay Shore and we’re gonna get ready for that.”

Bay Shore (3-2) plays Brentwood (2-3) on Saturday.

East Rockaway/West Hempstead's offense coming up Rose

Tristen Rose has emerged as the centerpiece of East Rockaway/West Hempstead’s offense.

The junior running back delivered his biggest performance yet against previously unbeaten North Shore last week. Rose rushed 20 times for 327 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-26 victory, helping the newly merged program improve to 2-3 after an 0-2 start.

Rose opened the game with an 85-yard touchdown run, displaying his speed before running over a defender for another score.

“He’s a little bit of everything,” East Rockaway coach Russell Pajer said. “He has to be a little physical to get through the hole, and then he turns on the speed.”

Rose rushed for 234 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore. Now, he has become the team’s primary running back, with 800 yards and nine touchdowns through five games this season.

“He goes to all the workouts, he lifts, he runs, he watches what he eats,” Pajer said. “He does all the right things off the field.”

The success has come despite significant adversity for East Rockaway/West Hempstead, which has dealt with seven serious injuries, according to Pajer.

But the challenges of injuries and combining two programs haven’t prevented the players from developing chemistry and finding their rhythm.

“They really bonded together, and they believe in each other,” Pajer said. “They enjoy playing together and practicing together, and it’s showing on the field.”

East Rockaway/West Hempstead now turns its attention to hosting Lynbrook on Friday.

“Big rivalry,” Pajer said. “They all grew up together. Friday night lights, you can’t beat that.”

It will be the first meeting since 2005, when East Rockaway defeated Lynbrook, 41-6. Before that, the teams last met in 1987.

Jack Halpin keeps Islip's passing game on target

Islip’s passing attack has picked up right where it left off, even with a new quarterback and an almost entirely new receiving corps this season.

Jack Halpin, who played wide receiver last year, ranks second in Suffolk with 1,110 passing yards through five games.

The senior follows former Islip quarterbacks Jack Rao, who ranked second in Suffolk with 2,367 yards last season, and Brady Nash, who ranked third with 2,362 yards in 2024.

Halpin trained with Nash over the summer to prepare for the transition.

“It’s definitely been a hard transition, playing wide receiver to going to quarterback now, but I trained with Brady Nash over the summer a bunch,” Halpin said. “He definitely helped me with my throwing and my decision-making.”

Halpin passed for 280 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 105 yards and a score in a 43-6 win over Comsewogue last week. In the previous week’s contest, he threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-21 victory over Half Hollow Hills West.

“The last two games, it’s just kind of really clicked with him,” Islip coach Jamie Lynch said. “He’s gotten control of the offense.”

“He was a little tense the first couple weeks,” Lynch added. “I just told him, ‘Listen, you’re one of the best athletes out there. Let it rip.’”

Nash has enjoyed watching Halpin continue Islip’s strong quarterback production.

“It’s super exciting to see all his hard work pay off,” Nash said. “His footwork, the way he carries himself and the way he leads himself, every bit of work he put in, it all just shows on the field.”

Islip visits Hauppauge on Friday night in a matchup of 3-2 teams in Suffolk III.
