Week 1 and we've already got plenty to talk about, not that we expected anything less.
The fall season kicked off proper with an OT nailbiter in Syosset that taught us two things: the Braves are a credible Conference I contender and Uniondale is better this year. It also taught us that it's never too early for football. The Labor Day game was the earliest contest in LI football history. Probably. (That's what Jack White said. And we listen to Jack White.)
Half Hollow Hills West win over Riverhead demonstrated why you should always be nice to your kicker. Props to junior Kevin Stanis for winning the Nolan Gelman Award for Kickers Are Cool, Too.
Breaking News: Lindy's Steve Skon Still Really Good. (He plays baseball, too!...says the high school baseball beat writer.)
In Connetquot, Mike Pellegrino made people go, 'whoa.' Five touchdowns. Five. Cinco. We were impressed. Writer Steve Marcus even busted out "virtuoso" for that performance. Hansen candidate, much?
On a more solemn note, we had the story of the Kelly brothers, whose dad died on 9/11.
St. Anthony's proved it can take its show on the road. State College was ranked 4th in the North East (pre-season), by the way, and second in Pa. Legit win.
Finally, all hail St. Dominic, which returns to football from its 22-year hiatus. Their first game ended in a loss, but not bad for a program that hasn't fielded a varsity team since Oliver North took the stand (That's right. I just dropped an Iran-Contra scandal reference in the middle of a football blog post. Imagine the little "the more you know" rainbow right here.)
