It had potential to be an epic fail for Jackie DelliSanti.

But failure for DelliSanti and Commack has been rare over the last two seasons, and their success continued Friday night with a 52-48 win over Ward Melville in League I girls basketball.

Nursing a three-point lead, though, DelliSanti dribbled the ball off her foot and out of bounds with 7.5 seconds remaining. OK, so maybe the turnover wouldn’t have gone viral like an infamous video of her falling off a chair once did — that one became part of an epic fail complication video on YouTube that has more than 1 million views.

“I completely wiped out and now it’s everywhere,” DelliSanti said with a laugh. “I just use it to laugh at myself.”

She was able to laugh after the turnover, as well. The ensuing three-point attempt came up short, and Sam Miller sank one of two free throws to seal Commack’s comeback win.

DelliSanti, a senior who was honored before the game for scoring her 1,000th career point Tuesday, scored all 15 of her points through the first three quarters to keep Commack within range. Though she failed to score in the fourth, she created open looks for teammates.

“I can depend on anyone on my team to make the shot,” said DelliSanti, who had 10 rebounds and five assists. “They’ve done it before.”

And they did it again.

With Commack trailing by six entering the fourth, Casey Hearns hit back-to-back threes from the left wing to even the score at 43. Leanne Corso later drove and kicked it out to Jillian Spagnuola, whose straightaway jumper gave the Cougars a 46-45 advantage with 4:35 left, their first lead of the game. Spagnuola then drained a three to increase the lead to four.

“We knew that the only way we were going to win was by involving everyone on the floor and working the ball around,” said Spagnuola, who had 12 points.

Corso’s layup opened a 51-45 lead before Brooke Pikiell hit a three to pull Ward Melville within 51-48 with a little less than a minute left.

Taylor Tripptree had 12 points and Pikiell and Julia Coletti each added 11 for Ward Melville (4-1).

Corso had 11 points, helping Commack (5-0) erase its deficit and remain unbeaten.

“I said just win the fourth quarter by six points,” Commack coach Denis Conroy said. “We have big-game experience and maybe it was just us being like, ‘OK, we’re not losing this game no matter what.’ ”

Failure wasn’t an option.
