Julie Williams (43 points) catches fire to lead Hauppauge

Hauppauge's Julie Williams was a little frustrated after being held scoreless in the first quarter of Friday's girls basketball game against Smithtown East.

"They had a box-and-one on her,'' Hauppauge coach Jamie Edson said. "She was a little discouraged at the end of the first quarter, but after that, she started hitting everything.''

The senior guard finished with a career-high 43 points, shooting 7-for-10 from three-point range and 15-for-24 overall in Hauppauge's 60-48 non-league victory. Williams scored 17 points in the second quarter and 14 in the fourth.

Helped by Williams' 12 points, Hauppauge (6-1) outscored Smithtown East 18-9 in the third quarter to take a 44-31 lead.

Williams' previous career high was 33 points, set against Hampton Bays on Dec. 8. She eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau in that game and has 1,108 for her career.

Carly Tellekamp added nine points and 11 rebounds. Samantha Delaney scored 17 points for Smithtown East (4-3).
