Casey Rhine's hard work paying off for Roslyn girls lacrosse

Don’t judge Casey Rhine off her age alone. Sure, she may only be a sophomore at Roslyn High School, but she’s already emerged as one of the team’s go-to stars and leaders on and off the field.
Rhine has 44 goals and 18 assists, takes the draws and controls nearly every facet of the game from the midfield.
“She does it all for us,” coach Lauren Lopez said. “It’s really important for a team like ours especially. When you have one player who can do it all, it kind of keeps the pressure off the athletes where lacrosse is their secondary sport.”
Rhine trains nearly every day for lacrosse, whether with her school, club or individual work. And her teammates have noticed and know they can always turn to her for advice.
“I know it’s good to take on a leadership role on and off the field and yes, I am younger, but I don’t think it matters your age,” Rhine said. “In the end, it’s just what you do as a team to succeed and I can guide my teammates and they can guide me.”
Rhine had 33 goals in 12 games last season and Lopez said she’s seen the sophomore’s game and confidence rise this spring.
“It shows my hard work and determination that I know other people on my team also have,” Rhine said. “As a sophomore, I don’t think it matters my age. I’ve been playing for so long and honestly in the end, I think it just all comes down to hard work.”
Roslyn is 8-1 with goals of making the playoffs. Although the Bulldogs play in Conference IV, Rhine doesn’t see why they can’t go on a deep postseason run.
“We do have a goal of wanting to make the playoffs,” said Rhine with eyes on playing Division I lacrosse. “I don’t think our conference has so much to do with it because I feel like when we all step onto the field, we know we are just as good as every other team out there.”
Kayla Gilmore reaches 100
Kayla Gilmore, a sophomore on Floyd, scored her 100th goal as a part of the Colonials’ 14-3 victory over Smithtown East April 14. It took the standout midfielder only 39 games to reach the milestone. She now has 108 goals through 41 games.
Floyd’s victory on Thursday completed a suspended game from Tuesday when referee Jackee Redko suffered an injury on the Smithtown East turf. Redko later told Newsday she suffered a fractured hip and had surgery that evening.
Another deep Friars group
St. Anthony’s is off to another strong start this spring with a 5-0 record, highlighted by a 13-10 victory over a tough Sacred Heart team.
Ava Biancardi, committed to Duke, had five goals. Rose Christie, committed to Villanova, added two goals and two assists and Abigail LoCascio, committed to Northwestern, added a goal and three assists. St. Anthony’s and Sacred Heart were tied at 5 at halftime before the Friars went on to win their fourth straight of the season after going 12-0 in a CHSAA championship season last spring.
