The NSCHSAA boys golf championships was a tight race the entire way. Nobody was able to create separation, and 18 holes weren’t enough to decide a winner.

Chaminade’s William Argenziano and Kevin O’Mahoney, along with Kellenberg’s Jude Martucci, needed playoff holes. Argenziano and Martucci advanced to a second playoff hole. But it was the Chaminade sophomore Argenziano who secured the individual championship at Eisenhower Park’s Red Course on Monday with a bogey.

Argenziano, O’Mahoney and Martucci each finished 1-over-par 73, but it was Argenziano with the win.

“The second hole was the big one,” Argenziano said. “At one point I was 130 out and the pitching wedge was the play. I trusted my shot and it seemed like it worked. This feels great. My first time in this tournament and winning this and the team championship is amazing. It’s a big accomplishment for the team.”

Argenziano was not on Chaminade’s varsity team as a freshman. But one year later, the hard work paid off and he took home a crown on the big stage.

“It was a lot of work,” Argenziano said. “Especially after school, I’m always out on the course. Always practicing, putting, getting in the work and working on my strokes. Looking to lower my handicap and just get my swing better.”

Martucci eagled the 17th hole and birdied the 18th to force the three-way tie. Argenziano had a strong start with birdies on the third, eighth and 10th holes to put him atop the leaderboard for the majority of the afternoon.

Chaminade’s Evan L’Esperance finished 2-over-par 74, while teammates Alessandro Maltese and Louis Compito both finished 3-over-par 75 to help the Flyers secure the team championship with five golfers finishing in the top 10.

Chaminade finished with 375, St. Anthony’s came in second with 382.

“Will and Chris Kofod were on the JV team last year,” Chaminade coach Gregory Gerner said. “Kofod was an all-league player and Will Argenziano came here and won it all. It shows how much you can improve in one year. He was our No. 7 or 8 this season, but our top golfers are all so close. All their hard work at practice and staying locked in has really paid off.”
