Chaminade's Mike McConie brings A-game on biggest stage
The way Chaminade boys golfer Mike McConie was swinging the club on June 6 seemed all too familiar. In fact, this sort of demonstration had rendered itself routine.
The biggest difference, however, was that this was his most pressure-packed tournament of the season.
As he did regularly throughout the season, McConie put together another great effort at James Baird Park Golf Course in Pleasant Valley, shooting 1-under par 71 to win the CHSAA state championship.
McConie secured the title with back-to-back birdies on the final two holes to finish two shots ahead of Dean Muratore from St. Anthony’s.
Chaminade coach Greg Gerner said McConie’s extraordinary performance on the season’s brightest stage was simply more of the same in relation to his production throughout the year.
“Mike’s scores were outstanding for us all year,” Gerner said. “He’s always either 1-over or 1-under par.”
Despite finding consistent success throughout the spring, McConie said he didn’t allow himself to look too far ahead on the road to eventually winning the state title.
“I really didn’t think too much about the state championship,” the junior said. “I thought more about the league championship.”
Gerner can’t wait to see more of the same production from McConie next year.
“He’s just a phenomenal player," Gerner said, "and I’m really looking forward to him returning and leading the team again next season.”
