Gorjian leads GNN to upset of Lawrence
Jonah Gorjian had 15 points, including a free throw with 4.5 seconds Wednesday, for No. 8 Great Neck North in a 55-51 upset of top-seeded Lawrence in a Nassau Class A boys quarterfinal. Evan Dorman added 16 points and 12 rebounds and Alec Ludwig chipped in 13 points and seven assists for Great Neck North (15-4). Great Neck North faces fifth-seeded Jericho in a semifinal on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at SUNY-Old Westbury.
South Side 68, Wantagh 57: Ryan Spadaford had 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead No. 2 South Side (17-2) in a Nassau Class A quarterfinal. South Side will play the winner of No. 6 Hewlett/No. 14 Roslyn in the semifinal round Tuesday at SUNY-Old Westbury.
Kellenberg 53, St. Dominic 50: Jeremy Arthur had 21 points, 11 rebounds and six assists on Tuesday night as Kellenberg (10-2) clinched its first CHSAA league title since 1988.
Chaminade 73, St. Mary's 64: Jon Patterson had 23 points and 11 rebounds, John Gallego added 20 points and 10 assists and Mike Walsh had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists on Tuesday night to lead Chaminade (7-5) to a fourth-place finish in the CHSAA standings.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lindenhurst 71, Northport 51: Junior Valerie Oyakhilome scored a career-high 36 points, including six three-pointers, and had 10 rebounds to lead No. 2 Lindenhurst (19-1) in a Suffolk Class AA quarterfinal. Colleen Ames added 13 points and, and Shannon Creehan had 10 points and five rebounds. The Bulldogs face Riverhead in a semifinal at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Farmingdale State.
Riverhead 67, Ward Melville 42: Jalyn Brown had 24 points and five steals for No. 3 Riverhead (19-1) in a Suffolk Class AA quarterfinal. Melodee Riley added 14 points and 15 rebounds for Riverhead.
Sachem East 53, Whitman 35: Meagan Doherty had 26 points and four steals for No. 1 Sachem East (19-1) in a quarterfinal of the Suffolk Class playoffs. Sachem East plays No. 4 Hauppauge at Farmingdale State Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in a semifinal.
Uniondale 58, Mepham 48: Jayda Hyatt scored 12 of her career-high 20 points during a 28-16 first half to lift No.4 Uniondale (13-5) in a Nassau Class AA quarterfinal. Uniondale plays No. 1 Baldwin in a semifinal on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Oyster Bay. Aliyah McDonald added 23 points for the Knights.
Baldwin 56, Farmingdale 42: Alex Hampton scored 21 points and Ayanna Hudson added 10 points and 10 rebounds for No. 1 Baldwin (17-1) in a Class AA quarterfinal.
MacArthur 40, Herricks 26: Vanessa Wyckoff had 13 points to lead third-seeded MacArthur (15-2) in a Class AA quarterfinal. Amanda Gross added 13 points and Jena Cozza had six points and seven assists. MacArthur faces No. 2 Massapequa in a semifinal on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Oyster Bay.
St. Anthony's 55, Kellenberg 35: Rebecca Musgrove had 17 points to lead St. Anthony's (14-0) to its second straight undefeated league season and CHSAA title.
