There was no need for added motivation for Commack in a key gymnastics meet Tuesday against Bay Shore, but Alyssa Burns and Shannon VonBraunsberg provided some, anyway.
"As captains of the team and seniors on the team, they motivated each other and the rest of the girls," Commack coach Cindy Greenberg said of Burns and VonBraunsberg. "They did their best, had clean routines and did really well."
Burns took second on bars with a score of 9.425, third on beam with a 9.05, and third on floor with a 9.35. VonBraunsberg came in third on bars with an 8.675, second on floor with a 9.475, and had the third best all-around score of 34.775 as Commack (5-0, 1-0) handed Bay Shore its first loss, 167.325-163.05, to remain unbeaten in Suffolk League I.
Commack overcame Bay Shore's Olivia O'Connor, who won three events - bars with a 9.5, beam with a 9.325 and floor with a 9.5 - and also came in second on vault with an 8.85, and won the all-around with a score of 37.175.
"Bay Shore is an awesome team," Greenberg said. "We respect them very much and we wish them the best for the rest of the season, but this is a big win for Commack."
