Forced to go the length of the court with 4.6 seconds remaining, Brody Gazzo worked off a double screen to finish a driving layup at the buzzer to force overtime in No. 7 Northport’s home double-overtime win over No. 10 East Hampton, 61-57, in the first round of the Suffolk Class AA playoffs. Gazzo finished with a game-high 28 points.
Ryan Cogan hit a free throw with 0.8 seconds left to make it a four-point game. Harry Radziul had 10 points, eight rebounds and six blocks. Joe Pavinelli added 13 points.
Toby Foster had 18 points for East Hampton (10-11) and Mason Jefferson scored 17. Irakli Shiolashvili added 11 points.
Northport (11-10) will travel to No. 2 Half Hollow Hills West for the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20.
West Islip 40, Harborfields 27: Conor Kenefick scored 11 points to lift No. 8 West Islip past No. 9 Harborfields in the first round of the Suffolk Class AA boys basketball playoffs.
TJ Sonnenberg added nine points and 10 rebounds as the Lions claimed their first playoff win since 2005.
Ryan Barling led Harborfields (9-11) with 11 points. West Islip (11-10) will travel to No. 1 Smithtown West at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, for the quarterfinal round.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
THURSDAY’S GAMES
Syosset 76, Uniondale 42: Samantha Schneider scored 37 points and became Syosset’s all-time leading scorer in the first quarter of the team’s Nassau AAA-I win. She finished the game with 1,429 career points for Syosset (10-6). Zahara Saintyl led Uniondale (8-9) with 21 points.
Seaford 43, North Shore 37: Samantha Richardson hit all four of her free throws inside the final 20 seconds of the game to seal the win for Seaford (15-5) in Nassau A-II. She finished with nine points, 15 rebounds, three assists and three blocks, as the Vikings completed a 12-0 season in league play. Erin Lily La Rosa had 14 points for North Shore (14-6).
Locust Valley 52, Friends Academy 45: Elizabeth Vitale scored a game-high 21 points in Nassau A-II to clinch a playoff spot for Locust Valley (9-10). Lucy Miller led Friends Academy (9-11) with 20 points.
Wantagh 69, Valley Stream South 24: Melina Gallo had 11 points and five rebounds for Wantagh (18-2), which clinched its first Nassau A-I title since 2019. Jessica Dyer led Valley Stream South (4-16) with 10 points.
