The winter storm that is expected to drop between 5 and 9 inches of snow is causing high school sports events to be postponed.
The storm warning is in effect for all of Nassau County and about half of Suffolk until 1 p.m. Saturday. Administrators from both counties said they are leaving it up to the schools to make the decision to postpone.
“The decision is up to the schools,” said Pat Pizzarelli, the executive director of Section VIII, Nassau's governing body of high school sports. “I expect most, if not all of [the schools] will move their games.”
As of 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, the Malverne and Carle Place girls and boys basketball tournaments and the East Meadow boys wrestling tournament, which were originally scheduled for Saturday, are being postponed.
There are seven other boys basketball games, six other girls basketball games and two other wrestling tournaments in Nassau scheduled for Saturday.
Suffolk will also leave the decision to play up to the school districts.
“The schools will make the decision if they are playing tomorrow and Sunday’s games, not the section,” said Tom Combs, the executive director of Section XI. “We’re hoping it’s not too bad, but I’ve already heard from a few [athletic directors] that some games will be moved to next week.”
Whitman at Northport girls basketball, originally scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Saturday, is being postponed. Combs did not have the names of other schools who have decided to reschedule their games.
There are 12 other boys basketball games and six girls basketball games in Suffolk scheduled for Saturday.
