Hobson spurs Amityville to victory
Richie Hobson scored five of his 13 points during a key stretch in the fourth quarter as Amityville overcame a third-quarter deficit for a 57-55 win over host Mount Sinai last night in a Suffolk League VI boys basketball game.
Trailing 42-40 after three quarters, Amityville, led by Hobson's five points, went on a 9-0 run for a 49-42 lead.
Mount Sinai trimmed the deficit to 55-53 after a three-pointer by Alex Pintabona, but Hobson hit two free throws with 50 seconds left to extend the Warriors' lead to 57-53. Mount Sinai had a chance to at least tie the score later in the fourth, but Amityville's Kavione Green made a steal with 10 seconds left to seal it for the Warriors (9-0).
Hobson added five steals and Green chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds for Amityville.
Mike Guzzardi led Mount Sinai (7-3) with 20 points and Pintabona chipped in 12.
Shoreham-Wading River 64, Glenn 59:John Kovach had 27 points and eight rebounds to lead SWR (5-5) in League VI. Kevin Turano added 17 points and six assists for the winners.
Smithtown East 52, Riverhead 41: Jon Feiler scored seven of his game-high 29 points during a 21-11 fourth quarter to lift Smithtown East (7-2) in League III. Feiler added 14 rebounds and three blocks, Andrew Ward chipped in 10 points, including eight in the second half, and eight rebounds and Alex Spinelli scored all seven of his points in the second half.
North Babylon 73, Centereach 43: Fola Branco scored 11 of his 22 points during an 18-10 first quarter, including three of his five three-pointers to lead North Babylon (5-5) in League III.
East Islip 61, Newfield 31: Evan Maxwell had 14 of his 16 points in a 37-14 first half and added 16 rebounds to lift East Islip (9-1) in League III.
Bellport 71, Copiague 59: Senior forward Will Edwards had 11 points, three blocks and a career-high 18 rebounds for Bellport (8-3) in League IV. Armand Correa had 24 points and David Kinard chipped in 12 points in the win. Michael Mathis had 27 points for Copiague.
West Babylon 71, Hauppauge 45: Rashad Cooper had 18 points, all in the second half, and added 10 rebounds to lead West Babylon (6-5) in League IV. Mike Richardson added 16 points and six assists in the win.
Eastport-South Manor 60, Miller Place 28: Dalton McCarthy had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Anthony Annunziata had 16 points to lead Eastport-South Manor (6-3) in League V.
Harborfields 91, Sayville 42: Lucas Woodhouse had 26 points and 20 assists to lead Harborfields (9-0) in League V. Kevin Zabransky shot 4-for-4 from three-point range and finished with 14 points for the Tornadoes.
Southampton 78, Wyandanch 50: Shaundell Fishburne had 13 of his 26 points in the second quarter and Mike Gilliam had 18 points and eight rebounds for Southampton (7-3) in League VII.
East Rockaway 50, Cold Spring Harbor 46: Joey Lores hit a three-pointer with a minute left put East Rockaway (6-5) ahead for good in Conference BC. Justin Jonas led the Rocks with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Solomon Schechter 47, Knox 27: Eighth-grader Cole Eiber had 13 of his career-high 22 points during a 17-1 third quarter and Jacob Katz had 12 points and nine rebounds for Solomon Schechter (6-6) in IPPSAL.
Lawrence Woodmere Academy 52, Browning School 42: Rokas Lapsys had 11 of his 23 points in the third quarter and added 12 rebounds, Trent Parrish had 14 points and seven assists and Jake Lundenberg had 12 points for Lawrence Woodmere Academy (15-3) in non-league.
BOYS FENCING
Half Hollow Hills East 17, Newfield 10: Matt Ross, Mike Choi, and Sam Pak went a combined 8-1 in epee for Half Hollow Hills East (8-6) on senior day.
Hewlett 14, Jericho 13: Jake Kleinberg clinched the win with a victory in epee to lead Hewlett (4-8) in the Division I playoffs.
GIRLS FENCING
Half Hollow Hills East 16, Newfield 11: Seniors Carly Perlman and Raquel Warmoth went a combined 6-0 in saber for Half Hollow Hills East (12-2) on senior day.
BOYS BOWLING
Sayville Small Schools champ. Sayville finished with a four-game pin total of 4,024 to capture the Suffolk Small Schools championship on Tuesday night at Coram Country Lanes. Bellport's Sean Millsap had a four-game average of 211.75, Central Islip's Matt DiGiantomasso had the high three-game series of 672, while Mike Kovarick of Islip had the highest single game of 265.
GIRLS BOWLING
St. John the Baptist 2, St. Anthony's 1: Leanne Cosentino had a 182 in Game 3 of a 465 series and Katelyn Coon had a 181 in Game 2 of a 432 series as St. John the Baptist (10-0) won, 804-754, 814-710, 754-774, in CHSAA. Jessica Reiszel bowled a 196 in Game 1 of a 517 series for St. Anthony's.
