Garret Gates struck out 20 of the 21 batters he faced and pitched a perfect game for North Shore in its 2-0 victory over Herricks in a non-league baseball opener on Monday.

Gates struck out the final 19 batters who came to the plate after the second batter of the game grounded out to first.

Raymond Scalzo’s sacrifice fly drove in Matt Ryan to give North Shore a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Gates had an RBI groundout to drive in Antonio Barbetta for the second run in the fifth inning. Justin Rosen went 2-for-3 with a double.

Seaford 12, Carle Place 0: Jason Berthel hit a home run in the fifth inning and Anthony Janes went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Seaford in non-league. Luke Walsh had six strikeouts in a five-inning no-hitter.

Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK 4, Freeport 2: Ryan Kurre went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Anthony Powers went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK in Nassau AAA-I.

Farmingdale 5, East Meadow 3: Jack Molloy struck out eight and allowed two hits and two walks for Farmingdale in non-league. Dean Pasolini had an RBI single in the second inning before Eli Sierra followed with an RBI single. Pasolini added an RBI single in the sixth inning. John Franco didn’t allow a hit in the seventh inning to earn the save.

Miller Place 8, Islip 3: Mikey Monaco’s single drove in the go-ahead run for Miller Place with two outs in the top of the sixth inning in Suffolk VI. Alex Strickland was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Nick Calandrino was 1-for-2 with two RBIs for the Panthers. Nick Frusco threw four scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out 10. He also had two RBIs and scored two runs.

SOFTBALL

Miller Place 4, Islip 1: Ava Zicchinelli hit a two-run home run and Laney Vomero went 3-for-3 with two doubles for Miller Place in Suffolk VI.

Lynbrook 8, South Side 6: Bianca LoBosco and Jess Ferrara each went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Lynbrook in non-league. Katie Sharkey went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Kylie Schroeder had six strikeouts in a complete game.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Middle Country 12, North Babylon 11: Ava Benasutti scored the winning goal off an assist from Meghan Ippolito to break a tie at 11 with 10:05 left in the fourth quarter for Middle Country in Suffolk I. Ella Hirsch had five goals and Ippolito added three goals and two assists. Angela Taddeo had six goals and three assists for North Babylon.

Ward Melville 10, Longwood 5: Kate Spinks had four goals and one assist and MJ Timpanaro had two goals and five draw controls for Ward Melville. Northport 11, Huntington 9: Kennedy Radziul and Julianna Tietjen each had three goals and two assists for Northport. Sabrina Boyle had four goals and one assist for Huntington.

Bethpage 18, St. John the Baptist 15: Kylie Traversa had five goals and Grace Miller had eight draw controls for Bethpage in nonleague. Alexandra Cossaro and Payton Morgan each added three goals, and Grace Miller had two goals and one assist. Sophia Virgilio had seven goals and two assists for St. John the Baptist.

Hicksville 11, Island Trees 9: Brooke Sullivan-Pagano had eight goals for Hicksville. Kayla Tretola had six goals and one assist for Island Trees.

SATURDAY’S GAMES

Oyster Bay 11, Lynbrook 6: Marlo Knox had four goals and two assists for Oyster Bay in nonleague. Sarah Byrne had two goals and two assists. Mary Costello made 12 saves for Lynbrook.

Garden City 5, Radnor (Penn.) 4: Maureen Arendt scored the winning goal with five minutes left to lead Garden City in nonleague. Kyle Finnell added two goals and one assist and Niamh Pfaff made six saves.

BOYS LACROSSE

East Islip 14, Sayville 5: Matt Baldino had four goals and two assists and Charlie Heffernan had three goals and one assist to lead East Islip in Suffolk II. Drew Walendowski had 17 saves. Javen Taff had three goals and two assists and Mikey Sands had 16 saves for Sayville.

Mount Sinai 12, West Babylon 9: Nick Carretta had five goals and one assist for Mt. Sinai. Lucas LaForge added two goals and three assists and Enzo Barranca had two goals and one assist. Liam Henshaw had four goals and three assists for West Babylon.

Shoreham-Wading River 13, Rocky Point 3: Andrew Cimino had three goals and one assist and Liam Gregorek scored three goals for Shoreham-Wading River. DJ Xavier made 15 saves for Rocky Point.

Locust Valley 16, Clarke 0: Owen Hickey had three goals and one assist and Shane Pollard had two goals and three assists for Locust Valley in Nassau C/D. John Scott added three goals.
