Ice hockey dominates first winter Big 10

1. SMITHTOWN ICE HOCKEY
It's hard to argue with 14-0 and Smithtown has already gone unbeaten through the entire Suffolk varsity division and clinched a playoff berth. It has one real challenge left on its schedule, Connetquot/Sayville, two games from now on Jan. 9. They open the winter season as the number one team in the Big 10.
The Warriors won four straight duals at the Tom Ryan Duals last week. They have 13 wrestlers ranked in the top six in the 15 individual weight classes in Nassau. Wantagh is the defending Nassau tournament champion and is led by 170-pounder Chris Loew and 182-pounder Alex Widell.
The Bulls lead all Suffolk teams with a 1,037 team average and are off to a 5-0 start. Senior Greg Reed has the high average of 223. Sophomore Frank Masone rolls to a 217 average.
East Islip is the defending Suffolk champion and opened this season with an average of 1,015. The team is led by junior Lena Sorrentino (215.6) and senior Nancy Baione (213). They have four bowlers with averages over 200.
5. ST. ANTHONY'S GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Friars (4-1) opened the week with a 66-39 win over St. John the Baptist behind Symone Kelly's 16 points and 10 rebounds. Then they beat Holy Trinity 58-37 as Rebecca Musgrove had 20 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. St. Anthony's capped the week with a 72-63 loss to Forest Park (Va.).
The defending CHSHL champions look to be the best team in the league yet again. The Friars (4-0) could have the best talent on Long Island averaging more than seven goals per game, but it's too early in their season to put them ahead of Smithtown in the rankings.
7. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS FENCING
Ward Melville is looking for its 11th straight Suffolk and Long Island titles. They're off to a 2-0 start.
8. HALF HOLLOW HILLS WEST BOYS BASKETBALL
Emile Blackman has emerged as one of the best players on Long Island. He leads a deep team that will press and run the court with anyone. The Colts are 2-0.
9. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Crusaders (7-1) defeated Curtis, 66-34 as Boogie Brozoski had 14 points and nine assists and Staci Barrett had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and then defeated Truman on Sunday.
10. SYOSSET ICE HOCKEY
Sophomore Corey Hoffman leads the league in scoring, averaging more than six points per contest with 19 goals and 20 assists through just six games. The Braves (7-1) already have big wins over Long Beach, Massapequa and Levittown.
