The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission would determine if the updated voluntary standards for youth football helmets are adequate.
If the CPSC determines the voluntary standards are not sufficient, it would write the mandatory safety rules.
No sports team would be required
to buy new equipment.
Federal Trade Commission can impose penalties for companies that use false safety claims to sell any children's sports gear.
Require third-party testing and certification requirements for all youth football helmets (including reconditioned helmets) used up to age 18.
Provide a label with the date of manufacture on new helmets or when helmets were reconditioned.
Provide a warning label that a football helmet's ability to protect the wearer can decline over time.
