Gregg Sarra ranks Long Island's top winter high school teams:

1. EAST ISLIP BOYS BOWLING - Aaron Rice leads Suffolk with a 237.15 average and teammates Joseph Zagari (225.94) and Christopher Andresen rank (219.07) third and fifth respectively. Sonny Pico, who is sixth in the county with a 218.54 average, rolled a 289 in the second game of a 767 series against Islip to help the Redmen clinch the Suffolk I title, and cap a perfect 14-0 regular season.

2. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN BOYS BASKETBALL – Andre Curbelo had 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists and was named the game’s MVP as Long Island Lutheran defeated Holy Spirit Prep (Atlanta, GA), 60-52, at the HoopAll Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts. Essam Mostafa added 15 points and 13 rebounds in the win.

3. WARD MELVILLE BOYS FENCING – Reached 173 straight regular season wins after defeating Whitman, Brentwood and Sayville. Leo Takemaru, Josh Yen and Albert Tian continue to lead a dominant sabre team.  

4. MASSAPEQUA WRESTLING – Massapequa (25-0) opened the state dual meet championships with an impressive 35-23 over Sachem East. 99-pounder Anthony Conetta edged Jared Weinhaus, 1-0, in a battle of top-ranked wrestlers in their respective counties.

5. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS SWIMMING - The Friars completed their fourth-straight undefeated dual meet season with a 101-85 victory over Fordham Prep, finishing the meet with a 400-yard freestyle relay victory by the team of William Swartwout, Christopher Stange, Joseph Tonna and Justin Meyn.

6.  EAST ISLIP GIRLS BOWLING - Julia Bocamazo (228.7) and Julianna Spina (228.1) finish the regular season in second and third place in average, respectively.  As a team, East Islip concludes the regular season schedule as Suffolk III total wood leaders with 32,336 pins. 

7. UNIONDALE BOYS TRACK – Jadan Hanson’s triple jump mark of a 48-foot, nine inch flight at the Hispanic Games remained tops on Long Island. Hanson also had the top long jump in Nassau, going 21 feet, five inches in November.

8. SEAFORD GIRLS BOWLING – Paige Donovan (188.7) and Marissa Mele (179.4) finish the regular season second and third in Nassau average, respectively. As a team, Seaford’s 687.4 pins per game tops Nassau by 46.2 pins. 

9. VALLEY STREAM SOUTH GIRLS TRACK - Chibugo Obichere, who is the two-time defending public school state champion, ran 8.12 in the 55-meter hurdles on the day after Christmas at the Armory. The time remains the fastest in the state. DeAnna Martin entered the weekend with the fastest 600 time on Long Island (1:35.31).

10. BRENTWOOD BOYS BASKETBALL - Led by a big three of Bryce Harris (20.4 points), Jordan Riley (18.4) and Kenny Lazo (9.4 points, 8.3 assists), the Indians look poised for another deep postseason run in Suffolk AA.
