Monday's high school games postponed by winter storm

Monday’s high school sports events across Long Island have been postponed due to the winter storm that left more than a foot of snow in some areas on Sunday.

“All the forecasts were saying this was going to happen, and it did,” Nassau's Section VIII executive director Pat Pizzarelli said.

Pizzarelli said he made the decision on Friday to postpone all of Monday’s games in Nassau. The decision in Suffolk was left up to the schools, but with schools being closed across the county, there are no games being played on Monday.

“The schools did the right thing and shut it all down,” Suffolk's Section XI executive director Tom Combs said.

Originally set for Monday night, the St. Anthony’s boys basketball team will visit St. John the Baptist on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

More than 60 events involving basketball, wrestling, bowling, fencing and gymnastics in Suffolk and Nassau will need to be rescheduled.

“Nothing is definite right now because we have a full slate of games tomorrow,” Combs said. “We’re just going to have to reschedule games as we’re able to fit them in.”

“We’re down to the end of the season and there are not a lot of days left before the playoffs start,” Pizzarelli said. “It comes down to the availability of the schools and officials. I have encouraged schools to use Sundays if they have to.”

As of Monday morning, all of Tuesday’s scheduled games were unaffected by any lingering dangerous conditions.

“As of right now, we’re proceeding like we’re having games tomorrow, but schools can say there are no after-school activities,” Pizzarelli said.

“Schools have to get cleared off, the sidewalks and roads have to be passable. There are a lot of factors at play,” Combs said. “If the schools are ready to go tomorrow, then we’ll have games. It will probably be a very busy week.”
