Sachem East hangs on to No. 1 spot in Big 10

The Flaming Arrows (19-0) are headed back upstate. Katie Shanahan scored twice and Sachem East controlled the action in the midfield as it defeated Massapequa, 4-0, to capture a fourth straight Long Island Class A championship. Sachem East, seeking its third state title in four seasons, faces Webster Thomas or Orchard Park in the state semifinals on Saturday, 11:30 a.m. at Maine-Endwell High School.
2. KINGS PARK GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Kings Park continued to show its might and mettle, rallying to beat South Side, 3-2, to win its fourth consecutive Long Island Class A championship. Amanda Gannon had 24 digs and 19 kills and Jaclyn Wilton 23 digs and 16 kills to lead the Kingsmen (20-0), who earned a 67th straight victory over Long Island competition. They will compete in the state tournament, which begins Saturday at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Sophomore quarterback Jack Coan tied a Long Island record for touchdown passes in a game when he fired seven scoring passes in a 49-6 pasting of Harborfields. Coan spread the wealth among five receviers. Top-ranked Sayville (9-0) will meet Eastport-South Manor in a Suffolk III semifinal Saturday at 1 p.m.
Halfback Isaiah White scored all three touchdowns in an 18-7 win over Sachem North. The win improved top-ranked Longwood to 9-0. The Lions will host Patchogue-Medford Friday at 6 p.m. in a Suffolk I semifinal.
The Venezia sisters led the Friars to a 5-0 win over St. Joseph by-the-Sea in the state semifinals as Francesca scored two goals and Niccola tallied two assists. The unbeaten Friars, who have outscored opponents 76-6 this season, downed Christ the King in the state championship game, 6-0, the 21st state title under coach Dave Prutting.
Hope Breslin and Kristen Bischoff scored in a 2-0 win over Hicksville to give Massapequa its 11th county title in 12 years. Melanie Hingher scored two goals in a 75-second span and Megan McCabe added another to lead the defending state champions to a 3-0 win over West Islip in the Long Island championship game.
7. ST. ANTHONY'S BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
The Friars won their 18th CHSAA Intersectional Championship on Sunday, the most of any program in the 87-year history of the meet. Pat Tucker won the individual title, running a 12:24.09 on the 2.5-mile course at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The time was the fastest in meet history, breaking the record of 12:25 set by Cathedral's Kevin McCarey in 1971.
The Seahawks extended Long Island's longest win streak to 21 games with a 55-7 thumping of Elmont. Quarterback Michael Catanese led the defending LI Class II champions with three rushing TDs and two through the air. The top-seeded Seahawks meet Long Beach in a Nassau II semifinal on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Hofstra University.
9. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS SWIMMING
The Patriots captured the school's 23rd straight Suffolk team championship with 301 points. No one was close as runner-up Habrborfields scored 250.5. Brittany Coughlin, Cassandra Willie, Casey Gavigan, Sarah Schoenfled and Katie Wang all qualified for state competition.
The Cougars captured their first Long Island championship since 1995. Defender Ryan Nigro, midfielder Justin Cebollero and goalie Ryan Sinnott have been tremendous defensively.
