Sachem East remains atop Big 10 amid playoffs
Five players scored a goal as the Flaming Arrows beat East Islip, 5-0, in a Suffolk Class A semifinal last Thursday. Sachem East (17-0), which has outscored its opponents 12-0 in the playoffs, faces Ward Melville Tuesday, seeking a fourth straight county championship.
2. KINGS PARK GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Amanda Gannon had 15 kills and 17 digs, Erin MacDougall added 14 digs and Kathleen Benson 11 kills to lead the Kingsmen in a 3-0 win over East Islip in the Suffolk Class A quarterfinals. The three-time defending Class A champions will play Bellport today.
The Lions improved to 8-0 and earned the top seed in the Suffolk Division I playoffs with a 55-26 win over Ward Melville. Long Island's top-ranked public schools team rode a three- touchdown performance from halfback Malcolm Stowe. Longwood is the highest scoring team on Long Island.
Halfback Matt Selts scored three touchdowns in a 34-0 win over Islip as the Golden Flashes, Long Island's top-ranked public schools team in the small schools, improved to 8-0.
The Friars are back on top of the CHSAA. Kayla Arestivo, Sabrina Cristodero, Katrina Friedman and Francesca Piccicci scored in a 4-1 win over St. John the Baptist as the Friars captured the league title. They play in the state tournament on Sunday in Staten Island.
The Chiefs are one win away from their 11th Nassau title in 12 years. Hope Breslin scored two goals in a five-minute span early in the second half to lift Massapequa to a 3-0 win over MacArthur in the semifinals. The Chiefs take on Hicksville Tuesday night in the final.
7. ST. ANTHONY'S BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
The Friars dominated the NSCHSAA League Championships, posting a perfect score at Sunken Meadow State Park on Oct. 26. Patrick Tucker won the 5k in 16:30.12. Frederick Buckholtz, Ryan Kutch, Ryan Dearie and Michael O'Leary rounded out the top five.
The Seahawks downed Calhoun, 40-3, to extend their win streak to 20 games. Nikolas Spillane ran for three scores and caught a TD pass. The Carey defense has allowed a Nassau County- low 79 points.
9. SACHEM NORTH BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Dylan Missry had 14 kills and four aces, Nick Miller had 11 kills and Rob Steinberg had 37 assists to lead Sachem North over Northport, 3-0. The win caps Sachem North's second straight undefeated regular season, and the Flaming Arrows have not dropped a game this year. Sachem North is the top seed in the Suffolk Division I playoffs.
Justin Cebollero, one of Long Island's top players, led the Cougars to their first county final appearence since 2010. Ryan Sinnott has emerged as one of the most reliable goalkeepers, and Ryan Nigro keys the defense.
