A tremendous fall season is over and Long Island garnered state titles in five sports. The St. Anthony's football team captured its ninth CHSFL title in 10 years with a 41-23 win over Iona Prep. The Friars were 11-0, the fourth undefeated season in school history, and earned Newsday's <a href="/topics/Big_Ten_Conference">BIG 10</a> fall crown.
We had success on the soccer pitch. The soccer teams at Brentwood, Sayville and Friends Academy won their respective boys state titles. The Massapequa and Garden City girls teams also earned state crowns.
The North Shore girls cross country team won a fifth straight Nassau crown and went on to capture the state Class A championship, the first boys or girls team to do so since 1992.
In the pool, Connetquot's Mikaila Gaffey won the 200 freestyle and the 50 free before teaming with Sara Dieterich, Nicole Hetzer, and Claudia Reyes to capture the school's third state title in the 200 medley relay. <a href="/topics/Sophomore_%28designer%29">Sophomore</a> Olivia Chan of New Hyde Park, swimming for Sewanhaka, also won gold. St. Anthony's (19-0) won its straight state CHSAA girls volleyball title.
You would have to agree it was a banner season for Long Island's athletes.
<a href="/topics/Football">Football</a> became a season of redemption. Six of the participants in the Long Island championships had avenged early-season losses to reach the big stage. Three of them, Freeport, Bellport and Lynbrook completed the exciting journey with Long Island titles. For Bellport, it was a record-tying sixth L.I. title.
Farmingdale beat Freeport, 42-39, during the season in what many consider one of Long Island's greatest high school games. Freeport came back to edge Dalers, 36-33, in the Nassau Conference I title game. It ended when the Dalers' warrior of a quarterback Sal Tuttle, playing with a severe shoulder injury, scrambled for a first down on the final drive and came up a foot short at the Freeport 30 - game over.
The Red Devils weren't done leaving fans exasperated. They went on to beat Floyd, 62-35, in the Class I final when junior quarterback Isaiah Barnes rushed for an LIC record six touchdowns and threw for another.
"A ride to never forget, just unbelievable," said Freeport coach Russ Cellan, standing midfield amid a wild celebration at Hofstra.
The perseverance of a never say die Bellport team took home the hardware in Class II. Bellport shook off a 2-3 start, which included some disciplinary issues, to win seven consecutive games and roll to the Class II crown with a 26-21 comeback win over Garden City. Unwavering in his principles and following his code of conduct policy, coach Joe Cipp Jr. put the season on the line and the playoffs in jeopardy, by suspending 12 players before a loss to Comsewogue.
"We follow the rules or pay the price," Cipp said. "I will never put winning ahead of our policies and beliefs." 
The "Cippers" bounced back to avenge a 10-7 loss to top-seeded East Islip, with a 32-14 playoff win to claim the Suffolk crown. Cipp became Suffolk's all-time wins leader at 210 and set the stage for dramatic win number 211 in the LIC.
"This one is special because of how we started and how we finished," Cipp said. "We learned valuable life lessons along the way and stuck together like a family."
Lynbrook suffered its only loss of the year by a point to Lawrence, yet came back for a stirring win in the Nassau Conference III final. The Owls used an explosive offense to reach the LIC for the first time since 1992. They outscored a game Sayville, 42-27, to claim the crown.
"The absolute best feeling ever," Lynbrook coach Steve LoCicero said.
That kind of feeling was felt throughout Long Island. Brentwood (20-1-2), which has played for the state boys soccer championship in five of the past six seasons, won the Class AA championship for the second time in three years. The Indians had six shutouts in seven playoff games and were ranked sixth in the country by <a href="/topics/ESPN">ESPN</a> RISE magazine. Friends Academy (15-1-2) won its second straight state Class C title led by 28-goal scorer Matt Slotnick and fullback Colin Heffron.
The Massapequa girls soccer team used a stifling defense to post 16 shutouts and allowed only four goals in 20 games on its way to the state Class AA crown. The Chiefs (19-0-1) were the epitome of team rotating three goalkeepers on the road to the title.
And in Garden City, the Trojans upended perennial state qualifier South Side and made their first appearance in the state tournament since 1996. Erin Greiner scored with 1:26 left in the second overtime to give Garden City a 2-1 win over Rye for the state crown.
It was just one of the exciting finishes to a stellar fall season.

1. ST. ANTHONY'S FOOTBALL The Friars put the exclamation point on another brilliant undefeated season with a 43-21 win over Iona Prep for the school's ninth CHSFL Class AAA championship in the past 10 years. Senior quarterback Charlie Raffa threw for four touchdowns, including three to standout wide receiver Mike Kensil. The title also earned the Friars the BIG10 Fall championship. 
2. MASSAPEQUA GIRLS SOCCER Senior midfielder Amanda Reverberi, who was named outstanding player and Emma Lee Meyer, who was named outstanding keeper, helped take home the program's first title since 2005 after Massapequa beat Webster-Thomas, 2-0, in the Class AA state finals. Massapequa is ranked No. 6 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. 
3. BRENTWOOD BOYS SOCCER The Indians had an arduous road to winning the state championship for the second time in three seasons. They beat Scarsdale in the Class AA semifinal, 1-0. Johnathan Interiano scored and Herson Guzman made 11 saves. Brentwood beat Baldwinsville in the final, 2-0. Interiano and Frank Guzman scored for the Indians. Brentwood appeared in the state final for the fifth time in six seasons. 
4. CHAMINADE BOYS SOCCER The Flyers won their third CHSAA title in five seasons. Jon Stallone scored with 3:54 left in the second overtime in a 1-0 win over St. Francis Prep in the final. Kory Seibt scored with 1:32 left in regulation in a 1-0 win over Iona Prep in the semifinal. 
5. NORTH SHORE GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY The Vikings achieved two program milestones, winning the Class A NYSPHSAA championship and following that up a week later with a third-place finish at the Federation championships. North Shore was the first Nassau team, boys or girls, to win a state title since Wantagh in 1992. North Shore had three runners finish in the top 13 and finished 3rd at the <a href="/topics/Nike">Nike</a> Cross Nationals <a href="/topics/New_York_%28state%29">New York</a> Regional. 
6. GARDEN CITY GIRLS SOCCER For the second straight year, the Class A title resides in Nassau. Just with a different team. The Trojans have been to state tournament in 1996, but this time they came home with all the hardware, beating Rye, 2-1, in the Class A state final for the school's first state title. The No. 5 seed in the Nassau playoffs knocked off South Side, a perennial Class A power, and the 2009 state champ, in the Nassau final. 
7. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS SWIMMING The Patriots (9-0) won their 19th consecutive Suffolk title beating runner-up Connetquot, 422-359. Ward Melville won just two of the 12 events, with Shannon Lampe taking first in the 100-yard backstroke (57.51) and Taylor DaSilva, Jessica Fabrizio, Alex Donnelly and Lampe winning the 400-freestyle relay in 3:43.91. 
8. GARDEN CITY GIRLS SWIMMING The Trojans followed up their 12th consecutive Nassau title with a strong performance at the Federation state championships. Megan Zarriello took third in the 200-freestyle (1:52.46) and second in the 500-freestyle (4:56.56). 
9. ST. ANTHONY'S GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Earned the CHSAA state championship with a 3-0 win over Sacred Heart. 
10. GARDEN CITY FIELD HOCKEY The Trojans (18-1-1) fell short of a state title for the second straight year, losing in the Class B final to Lakeland. They did, however, win a sixth consecutive Long Island title and topped Pittsford Sutherland, 3-2, in a state Class B semifinal. Garden City outscored its opponents 88-7 this season.

MoonPies are nearly as delicious as the taste of victory.
The graham cracker cookie filled with marshmallow is a treat befitting the two-time Long Island Class I champions and 2010 Rutgers Cup winners. But only if you're in the club.
Terrell Brown, Derek Merritt and <a href="/topics/Robert_Morales">Robert Morales</a>, the original MoonPie guild, got the snack from their forensics teacher, Ms. Ashley, after class one day. And, well, let Brown explain their effect on the team: "They gave us this superpower, this mojo as [Ashley] calls it," he said. "Nothing against [coach Russ] Cellan, but the MoonPies did something he couldn't."
So the Red Devils linemen would eat their MoonPies after class the day before games, then clink them together and take a picture. The three boys were very protective of their club, but Brown, the winner of the Martone Award as the best lineman in Nassau, said Ashley probably flipped Isaiah Barnes a MoonPie after the L.I. Championships.
The junior quarterback scored an LIC-record six touchdowns, all rushing, and threw for another as Freeport earned a 62-35 win over Floyd at Hofstra. Freeport's 62 points were a championship-game record, as were the 97 total points.
"Every team is different. Last year, we counted on pretty much one guy, but we didn't have any Kevin Allens," Cellan said of last year's Thorp Award finalist. "[Barnes] had a great game, but he had a lot of help. That line moved some people. That being said, Isaiah was a one-man wrecking crew, and that wasn't the plan."
The usual plan for Freeport this season was to pound the ball with running back Dan Olivier, get speedsters Maurice Irby, Jere Brown and Evan Lapice out in space, sprinkle in some runs with Barnes and hit <a href="/topics/Jeff_Williams">Jeff Williams</a> on some passes. Needless to say, Freeport has plenty of weapons.
The Red Devils utilized them to near-perfection - a 42-39 Week 3 stumble against <a href="/topics/Farmingdale%2C_NY">Farmingdale</a> was their only loss - but don't tell that to a perfectionist like Cellan. When the coach was asked on MSG Varsity how impressive Barnes' seven-touchdown performance was, he said: "He had eight if you count the one to Floyd."
Yes, Barnes did throw an interception for a TD, and Freeport actually trailed 14-0 early in the game. But the Red Devils stormed back with a season-high 62 points, which gave them 511 for the season. That's also an L.I. record, though to be fair, <a href="/topics/Bethpage_State_Park%2C_NY">Bethpage</a>'s 2002 team and St. Anthony's 2003 squad scored 500 in only 11 games. 
"It's pretty incredible," Cellan said. "I've learned you just don't doubt kids, because you just never know what they're capable of."
This team was capable of scoring 41 points in five straight games, including arguably the best game on L.I. this year - a 41-38 OT win over then-undefeated <a href="/topics/Oceanside%2C_NY">Oceanside</a>. It also avenged the Farmingdale loss by stopping Sal Tuttle a yard short on fourth down to earn a third straight Conference I title. 
Was it all the MoonPies?
Said Brown: "They're the most amazing thing in the world. I would trade in favorite pen or pencil, no, my favorite car, for a box of those MoonPies. Can't go wrong with them."

Taste of victory was sweet for Freeport

The banner of names grows larger, and the banner of championships adds another year. 
Before every game this season, the Lynbrook parents hung a banner along their bleachers with the name of every Owl on the field - all 70 of them. 
Each contributed to Lynbrook's <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> Class III title - the school's first since winning the inaugural LIC in 1992 - and second-place finish for the Rutgers Cup, only nine points behind <a href="/topics/Freeport%2C_NY">Freeport</a>. 
"Having as many kids as we have allows us to play a lot of different people at different stages during the year," Lynbrook coach Steve LoCicero said, adding that in six games, all 70 players saw action. "It gives kids opportunities to shine." 
LoCicero favors a two-platoon system to get the majority of his troops playing time while also keeping them fresh. Mike Kozlakowski was the team's only true two-way player (fullback, defensive end), and he was a finalist for the Thorp Award. 
Year in and year out, Lynbrook's students come out in droves to play football, a remarkable feat for a town that does not have a youth football program. 
"By showing them that it's going to take more people than just these top 11 kids," LoCicero said, "that generates a team." 
The Owls finished 11-1, their lone blemish a 23-22 loss to <a href="/topics/Lawrence%2C_NY">Lawrence</a> in Week 7. They avenged that loss in the <a href="/topics/Nassau_County%2C_NY">Nassau</a> final, 39-14, and once the LIC came around, there was no doubt among the players that they were taking home the title. They beat <a href="/topics/Sayville%2C_NY">Sayville</a>, 42-27. 
"The week leading up to the <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> Championship, I was around the loosest, most confident kids I think I've ever been around," LoCicero said. "They're all coming up to me, from 1 to 70, saying 'Coach, we got this for you, don't worry.' " 
Maybe that's because they had running back Travis Lock and quarterback <a href="/topics/Paul_Magloire">Paul Magloire</a> on their side. The 1,500-yard rushers were electrifying in the postseason. In four playoff games, Lock rushed for 831 yards and 11 TDs. <a href="/topics/Paul_Magloire">Magloire</a> added 10 TDs in the playoffs and a pair of two-point conversions in the LIC, including a highlight-reel launch over two defenders to give Lynbrook a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter. 
Kendall Bruton, who made his first start of the season at cornerback that night, returned an interception 43 yards to set up the go-ahead score. 
Defensive ends Kozlakowski and Brandon Cheney each had a sack, as did tackle Dylan Bien. Luke Spitzer made plays at receiver and in the return game, linebacker Connor Daly had punishing hits and the big boys up front paved huge holes for Lock and <a href="/topics/Paul_Magloire">Magloire</a>. 
It all added up to a memorable night that capped a season they'll remember for years to come. "It feels great to make history," Magloire said. "When we're old and gray, we're still going to be talking about this."

Lynbrook relishes first LIC title since '92

More than halfway through the 2010 regular season, Bellport football was more about head-shaking than record-breaking. The Clippers were 2-3, a dozen of their players had been suspended one game for violating team rules, and the LIC looked like a party to which they would not receive an invitation.
"I'm too old to be tested like that," venerable coach Joe Cipp Jr. said at Thursday night's <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County%2C_NY">Suffolk</a> County <a href="/topics/Football">Football</a> Coaches Association awards dinner. 
He laughed as he made the comment, because he and his players once again were picking up plenty of hardware.
Bellport won its final seven games, including a dramatic 26-21 victory over <a href="/topics/Garden_City%2C_NY">Garden City</a> in the <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> Class II championship game, to earn its sixth L.I. title, tying <a href="/topics/North_Babylon%2C_NY">North Babylon</a> for the most since the event began in 1992.
 "I watched the Garden City game on TV and I was nervous, even though I knew the outcome," Cipp said of the thriller won on Travis Houpe's 3-yard touchdown run with 1:23 left.
Comebacks were a major part of the season's story line. The Clippers rallied from 17 points down to beat <a href="/topics/Riverhead%2C_NY">Riverhead</a> in Week 5, a turning-point game, according to Cipp. Their junior quarterback, Justin Honce, finally learned the intricacies of the newly installed spread offense, and Houpe emerged as a true game-breaker. Plus, the team bonded in true Bellport tradition, something they admitted they hadn't done early.
"In the beginning of the season, we weren't playing together," <a href="/topics/Syracuse">Syracuse</a>-bound two-way lineman Ryan Sloan said. "Bellport is all about one big family. When we played together, no one could stop us."
No one could stop Houpe. In the Suffolk semifinals, he silenced an overflow crowd at Newfield by returning the opening kickoff 95 yards for a TD. In the county title game vs. <a href="/topics/East_Islip%2C_NY">East Islip</a>, his 92-yard TD run broke open a close game and the 5-8, 180-pound dynamo set a county playoff record with 332 yards on 30 carries. In the LIC, Houpe overcame two injuries to gain 104 tough yards, including the game-winning run.
"We talked about it at practice , that we weren't playing as one," he said. "That's not the Bellport tradition. We're a brotherhood and we play for all the people who played before us."
The 2010 team, which finished 9-3, continued that rich tradition. There will be county and L.I. championship signs added to the wall of fame that adorns the wall of the high school, adjacent to the football field named for the old coach. But 2010 also will be known as the year in which Cipp became the winningest coach in Suffolk County football history with 211 victories. He passed Comsewogue's Tom Cassese (209).
"There were a lot of emotions this season," said Cipp, who added he is thinking about retirement and will decide after the holidays. "But not because of the record. I'd rather win a championship than set a record any time in my life."
In 2010, Cipp and the Bellport family got to do both.

It's all about comebacks for Bellport in 2010

Preseason prognosis: discouraging . . . In-season performance: dominant . . . Postseason pedigree: dynastic. 
Welcome to St. Anthony's football and the rebuilding year that wasn't. 
The Friars seemed down for the count in September. Charlie Raffa, their starting quarterback, was so hurt, there was talk he'd sit out a few games. Most of last year's championship team was gone, replaced, instead with untested call-ups and bench-riders. They were plagued by injury, marked by inexperience, but still very, very talented. The question was whether talent would be enough.
Before the season, coach Rich Reichert was guardedly optimistic. "It's probably the first year in a long time we don't have experienced players coming back," he said in September. "I think we have to be more patient with this group. I have to hope they play well early. But you never know because with no game experience, it's hard to know how they'll react."
Bookend those remarks with the ones he made in early November, after St. Anthony's beat Iona Prep, 41-23 to take the ''AAA'' crown for the ninth time in 10 years and complete only the fourth undefeated season in team history.
"The undefeated part, I really didn't see that coming," Reichert said. "We got better as the year went on . . . We played a lot of seniors last year and then we had two of our big returning guys who got hurt and didn't play the whole season. Now we got the experience."
They also have the title. 
It wasn't enough that St. Anthony's beat the competition this year. The Friars played with a sense of purpose. St. Anthony's won its first game by 11 points, its next by 13. By Weeks 3 and 4, the margins were closer to 20 points. Only Iona Prep came close in Week 8, and even then, the Friars won by eight. 
The negative talk "definitely gave us more of a push and get this win," wide receiver Brian Kensil said. "We're not in reload mode, we're just back . . . A lot of people didn't think so, but we definitely wanted to prove them wrong and show them what we got." 
The Friars (11-0) defeated St. Joseph by the Sea, 42-8, in the quarterfinals and Fordham Prep, 39-14, in the semis. 
Meanwhile that quarterback with all the questions, Raffa, continued to embody what St. Anthony's had been about all season. The possible liability with the injured shoulder turned out to be an absolute boon down the stretch; his QB rating, 199.02 using the <a href="/topics/National_Collegiate_Athletic_Association">NCAA</a> formula, is the highest in the league, according to data compiled by the CHSAA. He finished with seven passing TDs and two more rushing in the three playoff games, and his gutsy 7-for-10, 255-yard passing performance in the title game all but guaranteed the title.
Tyler McLees anchored the second-best defense in the league, while well-balanced, effortlessly professional play by guys such as Kensil, Brian Sherlock and Mike Schillizzi did whatever Raffa couldn't on offense. 
"No one expected us to be here right now," Raffa said. "It's my last time playing football, so I wanted to go out with a bang."
Mission impossible turned mission accomplished.

Rebuilding? Not for the Friars

Empty backfield; full throttle. 
In Week 7 against <a href="/topics/Mount_Sinai%2C_NY">Mount Sinai</a>, Glenn coach Dave Shanahan decided to line up quarterback Ryan Rielly in a shotgun-spread formation with no running backs on either side of him.
"That opened up the running lanes for him and also the passing lanes because we put guys in motion," Shanahan said. "Our kids are better in space."
Rielly was in his own orbit from that day on. He had 506 yards of total offense against Mount Sinai, the stingiest defense in <a href="/topics/Suffolk_County%2C_NY">Suffolk</a> Division IV at the time. His numbers also were astronomical in the Knights' magnificent run to their first <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> championship and a 12-0 record. He totaled 432 yards in a rematch with Mount Sinai in the Suffolk semifinals, 431 yards in the county final against <a href="/topics/Babylon%2C_NY">Babylon</a> and 306 yards in a 28-7 victory over previously unbeaten <a href="/topics/Seaford%2C_NY">Seaford</a> in the Long Island Class IV title game.
"He's the most electrifying player on Long Island - no doubt," Shanahan said of Rielly, who set an L.I. record with 3,536 all-purpose yards and accounted for 41 touchdowns (21 passing, 20 rushing). "He turns bad plays into good plays."
Rielly, at 5-11, 180, isn't built like the prototype running QB, but he can take a hit - and deliver one, too. He ran for 250 yards against a stout Seaford defense in the LIC. The Hofstra-bound lacrosse player also thrives on a heavy workload. "When I get more touches," he said, "I get better results."
He had a golden touch all season, one in which Glenn did not play a close game after a dramatic 9-7 win over <a href="/topics/Bayport%2C_NY">Bayport</a>-<a href="/topics/Blue_Point%2C_NY">Blue Point</a> in Week 4. Greg Orkiszewski kicked the winning field goal in the final seconds after arriving late because he played in a soccer game that morning. Another key play was a daring run for a first down on a fake punt by Tom Forsberg to keep the winning drive alive. "One of the biggest plays of the season," Shanahan said. "Great players make great coaches, and these guys are great players."
There was greatness all around for Glenn football, which celebrated its first county title since 1979 - the pre-LIC era - after losing in the Suffolk final the previous two seasons. <a href="/topics/The_Knights">The Knights</a> wound up as the only undefeated public school on L.I. and won the Rutgers Trophy as Suffolk's most outstanding team. Shanahan called it "a perfect storm - great players, great coaches and great parents all in the same year."
Victory was clearly in Glenn's DNA - quite literally. Two players on the 1979 Knights, Jimmy Rielly and Jeff Massa, remained friends, married classmates and became parents on the same day when their sons, Ryan Rielly and wide receiver and linebacker Kevin Massa, were born in <a href="/topics/Huntington%2C_NY">Huntington</a> Hospital.
"What a great way to end my high school football career," said Rielly, ever the master of the understatement.
Said Shanahan - in a burst of civic pride about a high school located in <a href="/topics/East_Northport%2C_NY">East Northport</a> but full of students from another village - "This football team has put <a href="/topics/Elwood%2C_NY">Elwood</a> on the map!"

Irvin Flores was checking his text messages continuously as they came in fast and furiously. Flores, a senior for the Brentwood boys soccer team - and probably the Indians' top defensive player - was sitting in his room reading updates of his team's game against Massapequa for the Long Island Class AA championship. 
Because Flores received a red card in the Indians' Suffolk Class AA county championship win over Commack, he was forced to sit out the championship game and couldn't attend. The first text he received from friends at the game announced a Massapequa goal. 
"I felt like crap when I saw it," Flores said. "I felt so bad." 
That feeling changed quickly as Brentwood scored the next three goals and won, 5-3. In its celebration after the game, the team held up Flores' No. 5 jersey. That epitomizes what Brentwood was about. The Indians had great chemistry and rose to every challenge. 
When there were injuries, someone stepped up. Brentwood won the state Class AA championship for the third time and second time in three seasons. Brentwood (20-1-2), which has appeared in five state championship finals in six seasons, finished the season ranked sixth in the country by <a href="/topics/ESPN">ESPN</a> RISE and seventh in the NSCAA rankings. 
"This was a very unselfish team," Flores said. "We passed the ball without second thoughts. No one cared who scored. Everyone likes each other. Everyone was always happy and joking." 
There was a buzz of sorts in the preseason that Brentwood's dominance was at an end because the Indians' lineup had been decimated by graduation. Those doubts permeated after a loss to Commack in the opening league game. But the Indians had returned a lot of players, although many hadn't played much. 
"I told people this was a very good team," said Brentwood coach Ron Eden, who raved about his team in July. "Nobody listened." 
Said senior Frank Guzman: "Everyone doubted us after we lost to Commack. That was a turning point. It was another challenge for us." 
Brentwood wouldn't lose another game. In seven playoff games, the Indians had six shutouts, including both state tournament games against Scarsdale and Baldwinsville. 
"The defense never gets credit," Flores said. "Defense is the most important part in any sport." 
What made Brentwood so difficult to stop was its depth. Johnathan Interiano scored in both games upstate. Julio Olivares had two assists and Guzman scored a goal in Middletown. Herson Guzman wasn't tested much in goal, but made 11 saves against Scarsdale in the state semifinal when he was needed the most. 
Giancarlo Luna had three goals and two assists in the playoffs. Unsung players like Marvin Chinchilla, Ronald Garcia, Andres Franco, and Andres Padilla were big contributors. 
"We had a lot of experience in big games," Eden said. "League I is a nightmare of a league. Those teams make you better. You find out your weaknesses. I was hard on these kids, but they responded. Every single kid would shake my hand before and after practice. They know I'm there for them. I didn't let them get away with anything. It became a good relationship. I'm so proud of them."

Depth, camaraderie Brentwood's winning formula

Matt Slotnick and Colin Heffron sat next to each other in the Middletown High School gym two weeks ago chatting and smiling as they waited to be presented the trophy. The senior duo was a huge part of Friends Academy winning the state Class C boys soccer championship for the second consecutive season.
Back in junior high, they never thought this would happen. They played on rival club teams and weren't too fond of each other. Senior Chris Campbell, a defender who transferred to Friends Academy as a sophomore and also was a key cog in the Quakers' success, played with Slotnick on the same club team.
"We didn't really like him very much," Slotnick said of Heffron. "Once we became friends we became great friends. It's soccer that brought us together. We always knew it could be a good connection."
Slotnick scored 28 goals and Heffron had nine goals and nine assists as the Quakers finished their season with a record of 15-1-2.
"Not only have we been playing together for four years," Heffron said, "we play on an academy team together outside of school. We're the best friends and it shows on the field. There was a little competitive tenacity at first. Slowly, it translated into a really good relationship." 
Throw in Campbell and the trio came together to anchor a team that defeated Marathon, 3-0, in the state championship game, and outscored four postseason opponents 16-2.
"They have a dynamic," Friends Academy coach Marshall Lindner said. "Slotnick on the forward line, Colin in the middle and Campbell in the back orchestrate things. Honestly, I put the games in their hands. I don't overcoach the situation. These guys know what has to be done. They made other players better."
The attention they received opened it up for others and several different players stepped up in the postseason. Jon Nierenberg and Mike Isernio each scored two goals, Kyle Dineen, Drew Chartash, Harrison Seideman, David Sher, and A.J. Muran each added a goal in the playoffs.
Goalkeeper Eli Rousso, a backup last season, split time in goal often this year, but played all four games in the postseason and made some key saves early in a 3-0 win over Port Jefferson in the Long Island Class C championship.
The Quakers didn't expect to win last season, but they captured their first Long Island championship and went on to win the state championship. This year's goal was to repeat.
"It was a dream last year, but not a goal," Heffron said. "Everyone knew this year our goal was to get here and to win again. It would have been a disappointment if we didn't do it."
Said Muran: "Last year we were the underdogs and didn't know what to expect. This year we knew what we were up against and played really well." 
Friends Academy was the lone Class C team in Nassau and played in a conference with Class B teams and finished first.
"Nobody was thinking about a state championship when I first started here," Campbell said. "Since the beginning of the season we were looking to this game. To finally get here and win it is great. It's a nice way to end the season."

Close-knit Friends expected to repeat

Massapequa can throw the adage out the window, turn the quote on its head and look at the phrase inside out and backward: For them, the best offense is a good defense.
And not just a "good" defense. It's a soccer defense that let up only four goals all season long, never trailed at halftime and posted 16 shutouts in a 19-0-1 season, using primarily three different keepers and an array of gutsy girls in the backfield and some tenacity in the midfield.
Take primary keeper Emmalee Meyer (67 saves), a sophomore who came to the team two years ago because it couldn't find a netminder that could stay healthy. 
"For a 10th grader she has more experience than most seniors have," Massapequa coach Bruce Stegner said. "She's very vocal, and a good leader back there. She's not afraid to voice her opinion."
In 2010 she started each playoff game for the Chiefs - allowing just two goals - and blanked Webster-Thomas in the Class AA state final.
"In past years we'd made it to the Long Island finals. And that was great, because I was put in those positions where you're under pressure," Meyer said. "And this year, I was ready because of that experience."
Star midfielder Amanda Reverberi, a senior who was named outstanding player in the state championship game, was also ready. 
"Her heading ability is unmatched," Stegner said. "She's fearless in that regard. And when she gets the ball with her feet, it's rare she loses it."
In the midfield Reverberi was teamed with Tori Malley, who, Stegner estimates, played 90 percent of every game. The duo was a big reason the defense had such a spotless record - the opposing team's offense rarely got possession of the ball.
In the backfield, Stephanie Nelle used her speed to buck opposing players. Jamie Strumwasser had good distribution skills. And Tara Brady was a leader. 
"We've been playing together so long, we know how each other plays," Nelle said. "It's a lot of pressure, knowing that allowing one goal can change the game. But we know how to deal with it. We've been in these situations before."
Then there's the case of Tori Lander, who was awarded unsung player of the year by the Nassau Coaches Association. A senior, she tore her ACL as a sophomore and then tore another ACL as a junior in the Long Island championship game. This season she couldn't avoid injury. either, needing 45 stitches in her eye after going for a header in the Nassau semifinals. She came back and played a week later.
"Never during any of my injuries did I ever think to myself, 'I want to quit soccer,' " Lander said. "I wanted to come back and be stronger, better. I never wanted to give up. The next year I could come back and say, 'This is going to be the year we win.' "
So if you get offended by the old saying, "defense wins championships," just look to the 2010 state champion Massapequa girls soccer team. It has some girls who will tell you different.

As the cliche goes, defense wins championships. Sayville coach Val Winter wholeheartedly agrees, which led to a battle of wits with one of his assistant coaches who is more attack-minded. 
"We spent the entire year having friendly arguments about what's more important - I won," Winter said. 
After making the playoffs for 16 consecutive years under Winter's tutelage, Sayville won the Class A boys soccer state championship, the first in school history. 
The <a href="/topics/Kent_State_Golden_Flashes">Golden Flashes</a> (20-1-1) made a teamwide commitment to defense and held opponents to only four goals in 22 games with 19 shutouts en route to the title. 
Sayville goalkeeper Dan Scheck, who has committed to Temple, had four consecutive shutouts in the postseason. Scheck led the <a href="/topics/Kent_State_Golden_Flashes">Golden Flashes</a> with 11 goals during the regular season, splitting time in goal with Brian Lutcha and Rich Geiger. 
"It hasn't really hit in my head that we're the first in history but I'm so proud of my team," Scheck said after defeating Pittsford-Mendon in the state final. "It's what we've worked for the entire season." 
Sayville's defensive backfield may have been the best on Long Island this season. Dakota Edwards, a member of the U.S. Academy select under-17/18 team, moved from midfield back to his natural defensive position during the postseason. Edwards, along with sweeper Jared Van Brunt and defensive back Chris Siracusa, formed a nearly impenetrable wall in front of Scheck. 
"He's just incredible," Winter said of Edwards. "We always give him the job of marking the toughest forward and he's an incredible player, so highly skilled, so intelligent on the field, nothing bothers him." 
While Scheck did his job in goal, Sean Fullam was Sayville's clutch offensive performer during the playoffs. In six postseason games for the Golden Flashes, Fullam scored five goals, three of which were game-winners, and had an assist on a game-winning goal. 
"I'll be the guy up top just scrapping and I'm lucky enough that I'm getting balls from my teammates and doing good things with them," Fullam said after winning the state championship in which he scored the winner with 7:38 remaining. 
Forward Vincent Sakk assisted on Fullam's championship-winning goal. A day earlier, Fullam assisted on Sakk's winner in the state semifinals. 
Robert Hammerle, Jon Paciorek and Travis Redding manned the midfield for Sayville. Hammerle and Redding each scored eight goals. 
Sayville's talent and depth was too much for opponents to handle. Fullam said the historic accomplishment will make this year's squad unique. 
"I guess this will never be a team that can be replicated," Fullam said. "I don't think many Sayville teams have been this talented. 
"It was nice to put one in our record books."

Depth, defense helped Sayville win first title

It was an unforgettable moment when the North Shore girls cross country team received the state Class A championship plaque at Lakeside Park in Pawling.
It epitomized everything the Vikings' program has been about and has been striving for the last several years.
"It all came together at the perfect time, at the state meet," junior Samantha Nadel said.
North Shore became the first <a href="/topics/Nassau_County%2C_NY">Nassau</a> cross country team - boys or girls - since the <a href="/topics/Wantagh%2C_NY">Wantagh</a> girls team in 1992 to win a state championship.
The Vikings didn't lose a meet on <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> this season. But that doesn't mean everything was all roses. The Vikings experienced most of the typical setbacks other teams do.
"A lot of things happened. People got sick, people got injured," Nadel said. "We didn't actually think we were going to make it. When we actually did it, it was amazing."
Coach Neal Levy agreed.
"Our season was kind of a roller coaster. We started off well at the end of August and the beginning of September," Levy said. "Then we had some physical difficulties. But every week, the goal was to keep going on and improving."
The Vikings improved in a big way as they followed up their championship weekend with third-place finishes at the state Federation championship and the <a href="/topics/Nike">Nike</a> Cross Nationals New York Regional.
Finishing third in the Nike race was significant, because it was good enough to qualify the Vikings for the Nike Cross Nationals championship in Portland, Ore., Saturday, in which they finished ninth.
It was an important achievement for North Shore since only 22 teams in the United States make the grade. Of the 22 teams, 18 are automatic qualifiers. The remaining four teams are at-large selections. North Shore was one of those four.
"It says everything we've done has made it worth it. This was the ultimate goal," junior Brianna Nerud said of qualifying for the Nike Cross Nationals.
North Shore has experienced tremendous success the last half-decade, winning five straight Nassau championships.
The first four titles came as a Class B team. This season, the Vikings competed in Class A.
The Vikings' success is even more impressive considering the fact that three of those titles were overall county championships.
Two of those were as a Class B team. The third - this season - was as a Class A program. 
"We're a Class A school by seven kids," Levy said.
So what is the secret?
"The foundation of our program is the middle school team," Levy said. "There needs to be an easy transition from the middle school to the high school level."
Aside from having several experienced runners, the Vikings also boast a fair amount of youth.
Of North Shore's top seven runners, only two are seniors. The rest of the seven includes two juniors, two sophomores and a freshman. Some have been a part of the varsity squad since the eighth grade.
For freshman Molly Reilly, adjusting to the varsity wasn't as tough as she thought it would be.
"I was actually surprised how similar it was to the middle school. I wasn't exactly nervous, but I expected it to be more intimidating at the meets," Reilly said. "I feel like I fit in very well."
Promoting the team concept has also been a major factor.
"A big part of the reason why we do so well is that we all work together and work as a team," Emily Osman said. "This season has been more about the team than any one individual."
So has cross country become more than just a passing fancy at North Shore?
The team certainly thinks so.
"There used to be a perception that cross country was something people did just to jog around, not a big deal," senior Danielle Muoio said. "Now with all these accomplishments, I think people are starting to understand what a great team we are."

North Shore perseveres on way to state title

When the Garden City yearbook is distributed in the spring, one line printed inside might show that the school's first girls soccer state title may not have been as unexpected as everyone seems to think. 
But the truth is, what senior co-captain Barbara Sullivan wrote in her senior bio was more of an inside joke between the boys and girls soccer teams than a prediction. 
"We always joke like, 'States '10' or 'States '09,' whatever year it is because it never happens," Sullivan said. "In the beginning of the year when I filled out the bio, I put "States '10" under soccer, not thinking it would actually happen." 
But "States '10" is exactly what happened for Garden City and it culminated with the team's bus pulling back into town with a police escort and a state championship plaque. 
With the Backstreet Boys blaring from the speakers and girls dancing in the aisle, the bus returned to the school at nearly 11 p.m. the night they won the state title. The team was greeted by a standing ovation from family and friends welcoming home the first state champions in the program's history. 
"We are in a school where a lot of teams win," Garden City coach Mike Heedles said. "Not that it's taken for granted, but it's kind of expected. Ours really wasn't expected and it felt like we just accomplished something that was incredible." 
The first of those accomplishments came in the Nassau championship against defending state champion South Side, when Jill Yoo scored the game's only goal on a header off a throw-in by Sullivan with two seconds remaining in the half. 
"I said from the beginning of the year, the thing I wanted most was the county championship," Sullivan said. "Once we won that and were playing such great soccer, we just kept going and didn't think we could be stopped." 
They couldn't be stopped by Sayville in the Long Island championship. Tied at 1 after overtime, goalkeeper Christina Mangels blanked Sayville in penalty kicks as Christina Cesarini, Liz Mahoney and Amanda Murolo each scored to send Garden City to states. 
"We didn't realize it at the time but we made history," Mangels said of winning the state title. "We'll look back on this 10, 20 years from now and say, 'Wow, what a team that was and what an amazing journey.' " 
The journey continued upstate to Cortland, where Garden City, making its first appearance in the state tournament since 1996, got goals from Sullivan and Victoria Aldrich in a 2-0 win over Burnt Hills in the state semifinal. 
As time ran down in the second overtime of the state final against Rye, the possibility of co-champions loomed until Erin Greiner scored the biggest goal in program history with 1:26 remaining, propelling Garden City to a 2-1 win and a euphoric celebration. 
"It's probably the most exciting thing that's ever happened to me," Greiner said. "We never expected it to happen and it really couldn't get any better." 
What could be better than helping turn "States '10" from an unrealistic inside joke in a yearbook to an unexpected reality in Garden City . . . 'States '11'?

No kidding: Garden City girls are champs

St. Anthony'scoach Donna Newman sensed something special was brewing when, on the first day of volleyball tryouts in August, 88 girls flooded the gym. She had slots for only 12 varsity and 14 jayvee players, so that meant there were 62 cuts to be made.
The staggering number of hopefuls sent a not-so-subtle message to the returning varsity players: Show up for tryouts in shape and ready to play or risk being one of the 62.
"It set the level of play for everyone higher," senior setter Mariel Metalios said.
And while St. Anthony's has been accustomed to success, this team has given future teams something to shoot for:
 The Friars finished 19-0 - their second straight undefeated season.
 They won their third straight CHSAA title.
 They won their second consecutive state CHSAA title.
 They did not drop a game, and allowed no more than 20 points in any of those games.
"We met every goal that we set," Metalios said.
Newman said the foundation of perfection could be traced to uncanny team chemistry. 
"I could honestly say this group of girls got along beautifully," Newman said. "And with girls, that is unheard of. It was a great coaching environment, and it made my life a whole lot easier." 
Leading the charge was Metalios, CHSAA player of the year and three-time All-League performer who Newman called the "quarterback" of the offense.
"She runs our entire offense and decides, on her own, what play we are going to run," Newman said. "She has to make the adjustments. She is a true leader."
Metalios' All-League counterparts included libero Kerrin Maurer, the Half Hollow Hills West Tournament MVP. Kristen Castellano provided an offensive spark on the outside, while middle blocker Michele Impellizeri was the quiet one. Her less-than-bombastic personality inspired her teammates to start a chant - "no, no, not today" - whenever she blocked an opponent at the net.
Spurred by their version of "The Core Four," the Friars rolled through their conference and tournament schedules. The list of wins in weekend tourney play included Ward Melville, Massapequa, East Hampton and Eastport-South Manor - some of Long Island's top public school teams.
"We looked forward to the weekends when we got our shot to play the public schools," Metalios said. "It's always a good time when you play them."
With "The Core Four" among eight returning players from last season, the Friars were able to draw on a wealth of experience that manifested itself in a tour de force showing at the state tournament. In the state final against Sacred Heart of Buffalo, St. Anthony's grabbed the first two games by scores of 25-12 and 25-13. But Newman implored her team to close out the match in short order, and the Friars responded, winning the third game, 25-10.
It was icing on the cake. "I could see it in their eyes," Newman said. "There was no way this group was going to fail."

Chemistry, 'Core Four' were Friars' foundation

The buzzer sounds and the flash goes off and Mikaila Gaffey is gone. Connetquot's standout swimmer is a blur as she leaps off the starting block, and if she hasn't immediately outdistanced her competition, just wait until she makes that first turn.
The best swimmers are like torpedoes after their turn, knifing through the water under the surface where they can go the fastest, for the longest. 
And Gaffey is one of the best.
This sequence could describe the start to any 200-yard freestyle relay she swims. The record-setting one at the 2009 Suffolk team championships (1 minute, 38.41 seconds), or the one at counties in 2010 (1:37.23) that broke the previous year's record. Or it could describe her state championship swim this past Nov. 20 (1:36.57). 
Already a dual champ coming into the event - she won the 50-freestyle (23.48) and was part of the winning 200-medley relay (1:46.43) - Gaffey got the trifecta to cap her "senior" year in style. A traditional junior, Gaffey is graduating a year early and will attend <a href="/topics/Columbia_University">Columbia University</a>. She said she's felt the tug to stay in high school, but has no regrets.
"I think about how I could have four firsts or my times could be better," she said. "But I'm content about what I did. I want to graduate. I want to go to college. I want to experience the next level of swimming."
When she talks, she's a bundle of energy, stretching and craning her body. It's not done in a nervous way, but you sense that after excelling at academics, athletics and even music - she's an all-state violinist - Gaffey just might not know how to relax. She seems to be - pardon the pun - a fish out of water.
At the state championships, that's no problem. Gaffey ended her leg in the 200-free by touching the wall - ahead of everyone else, of course - and watching Sara Dieterich dive in to continue the relay. Then she pulled herself out of the pool for the last time in her high school career.
 
Dieterich's comeback
The fact that Dieterich helped win the two state championship relays - nevermind swam in them - is an astounding feat considering she missed the early part of the year with a calf strain in her right leg.
"Just a few weeks ago I wasn't even able to walk," she said. "I was just so humbled to come back and go to states. To actually accomplish what I've done, it's just an overwhelming feeling."
That experience helped lead her to athletic training as a possible career. "I really want to help people," she said. "I want to do something interacting with people, and I think helping people through sports is very satisfying."
When Dieterich, a junior, emerged from the water at the state meet, Connetquot not only held its lead, but actually increased it.
Now that's a full recovery.
Reyes: Dedication to swimming
Next up is Claudia Reyes. A sophomore, she's devoted to a life in the swimming lanes.
"I just like to really dedicate my mind to swimming," Reyes said. "I've always liked to swim, ever since I was little. And one day I said, 'I want to try out for the swim team.' And it just happened."
Reyes' relay leg at states once again bolstered the Thunderbirds' lead and was actually faster than Gaffey by .01. It's enough to make you think swimming might actually have been as easy for her as she makes it sound. But don't confuse confidence with taking states for granted.
"It's something a lot of people don't get to experience," she said. "It just doesn't really hit me until I stop and think about how big it really is."
 
Hetzer: The beat goes on 
Nicole Hetzer swims the anchor leg, but you wouldn't use the word "anchor'' to describe her. 
Possessing a light and positive personality, Hetzer wanted to be a teacher, but abandoned the idea after realizing she couldn't wake up quite so early every morning. She enjoys singing "whatever's on the radio, whatever comes to my mind."
Before she swims she shares an <a href="/topics/iPod">iPod</a> with a teammate and tries to listen to fast music to pump her up.
"I try to get one with a good fast beat, so when I'm swimming I have that in my head," Hetzer said. "And then I keep up with the beat."
Hetzer, a sophomore, finishes the relay over a full second before the next team, securing a third title - the most ever for Connetquot at states. It's the second straight year this quartet has won the 200-free relay.
The four girls from Connetquot have their own personalities, strengths and hopes. But out of it, they find a winning unity.
"There's really no one leader," coach Alex Scichilone said. "They do it together, as a team."

It's hard to call Olivia Chan's 2010 state experience a mixed bag. Because while she "only'' defended one of her two public school titles from 2009, she posted personal state bests in both events.
"I was very satisfied how it came out,'' she said. "The most important thing is trying your best. It would have been nice to get both championships. But I think this is a great thing for me, to see what I can do compared to other great swimmers.''
Chan, a sophomore who swims for Sewanhaka and attends New Hyde Park, again placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 3.21 seconds) at the public school championships, improving from a 1:04.48 winning mark in 2009. She finished second in the 200 Individual Medley (2:03.95), an event she won in 2009, but posted a time nearly three seconds better than her 2:06.35 last season.
Chan will compete at the Short Course Junior Nationals in <a href="/topics/Atlanta">Atlanta</a> next week in both events.

race to remember
The 400-free relay team of Casey Francis, Megan Brady, Frances Warren and Emily Tan lost to rival St. Anthony's during the regular season, costing their school the dual-meet title.
"We went into that relay thinking, 'Oh, they have it.' But they were touched out at the end,'' coach <a href="/topics/Mary_White_%28politician%29">Mary White</a> said. "I don't want to say they came back with a vengeance, but they had a point to prove. They were better than that.''
