Newsday Player of the Year: Lucy Olore, Wantagh, P, Jr.
If there were any questions surrounding who the Player of the Year should’ve been, Olore provided a definitive answer throughout the playoffs.
Olore tossed a perfect game in the opener of the county final series and a two-hit shutout in the decider to clinch Wantagh’s first county title since 1990. The junior also tossed a three-hit shutout and had two RBIs in the Long Island championship game.
Olore’s two-way impact led to her being named Conference I Player of the Year. She had a 1.228 ERA and 205 strikeouts over 144 ⅔ innings. She hit .443, with a 1.134 OPS and 20 RBIs.
“She’s steadfast and has ice in her veins,” coach Christine Moran said. “She’s been with us for a while now and she’s always put in the work. She’s not always going to throw a perfect game, but she gives us the best chance to win each time she takes the ball.”

Suffolk Player of the Year: Delaney Mathes, Sachem North, C, Jr.
Mathes’ sophomore season was excellent. Her junior year was even better.
The Stony Brook commit set school records with 10 home runs — which also led Long Island — a .643 batting average, 45 hits and 47 RBIs. She scored 29 runs, had 12 doubles and five triples and struck out just twice.
Her bat and presence behind the plate were the driving forces behind Sachem North’s run to the Suffolk Class AAA title.
“With the game on the line, she wants to be at the plate, throwing out a runner or diving for a foul ball,” coach Ken Sasso said. “Winners want the ball and she is a winner. I’m glad I get another year with her.”
