For most of Bay Shore this was nothing new. A title up for grabs as well as a spot in the Long Island championship.

For Emily Wolfe it was different. The sophomore, playing her first year on varsity, was thrust into the circle with a one-out jam in the fifth inning.

That wasn’t much of a shock to her but lacing a ball into leftfield with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning was something out of her dreams.

“I definitely wasn’t expecting that, it felt amazing,” Wolfe said. “I was so nervous this whole day and to finish it out like that felt great."

Wolfe’s walk-off single gave Bay Shore a 5-4 victory over Sachem North at Jim McGowan field and the title of Suffolk Class AA champions for the second consecutive year. Wolfe pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings and had two singles. Caroline Hobbes drove in two runs and had three hits.

Wolfe entered the game with runners on first and second, then gave up a single that rightfielder Kaelyn Pellman fielded to help cut a run down at the plate. Wolfe hit a batter to load the bases, then induced a ground ball to get out the inning.

“Over the season I’ve learned to control my breathing, and take a deep breath,” Wolfe said. “I’ve learned to just focus in on the game.”

Hobbes hit a booming double to leftfield in the fifth that drove in two runs to cut the lead to 4-3.

Down to their last strike, Jordyn Wolff hit a single on the eighth pitch of the at-bat to tie the game and ultimately send it into extra innings. Hobbes laced a single with two on that loaded the bases in the eighth and set the stage for Wolfe.

“I was seeing the ball well and swinging if it was near the plate, I knew I had to get the job done,” Hobbes said. “I never imagined winning one, but two is even sweeter.”

Bay Shore (20-4) will face Massapequa (16-7) in the Class AA Long Island Championship on Saturday.

EAST ROCKAWAY WINS NASSAU SMALL SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP. East Rockaway defeated Carle Place 20-7, on Tuesday at the Mitchell Athletic Complex in the Nassau Small Schools Championship.
