Sayville's Catherine Meyers was a hitter’s worst nightmare in the circle on Monday,. A strong mix of pitches had batters guessing. Some were late and others way out in front.

“I’ve been working on my changeup, coach wanted me to use it more,” Meyers said. “I was just getting them off speed, then throwing a rise to get it past them.”

Sayville defeated host Commack 4-1, in non-league softball. Meyers struck out 14 in a two-hitter for Sayville (8-1).

Meyers had some early trouble to work through as she hit a batter and issued a walk in the first inning. She then began to settle in and began a streak of 15 straight retired.

“It was just one inning, first inning, and no one scored so it was over with,” Meyers said. “I just wiped that away and played the next innings like they were the first inning.”

Bella Lundquist, who walked,  scored the game’s first run in the first when an errant throw allowed her to come home from third. The Golden Flashes scored twice in the fourth, one on an error and the other on a sacrifice fly by Callaghan Babcock.  .

Sayville scored its final run after catcher Sarah Blaskiewicz hit a bal to centerfield and legged it into a triple. Amanada Anderson drove her in with a two-out single.

Meyers gave up her first hit with one out in the h sixth on Kayla O’Boyle's bunt single. She struck out the next two hitters to get back on track.

“Cathy and I have been throwing together since tee ball, we’ve formed a connection over a long time,” Blaskiewicz said. “We know what we’re going to do without talking to each other.”

Commack (4-5-1)  attempted to rally late with a leadoff walk to Jillian Cestaro and a two-out single by Michelle DeFina in the seventh. A wild pitch allowed Cestaro to score from third. But Meyers struck out the next batter to end the game.

Sayville bounced back from its first loss on Saturday against St. Anthony’s Coach Tiffany Rowan thought it was imperative to put that game behind them.

“I think we kind of carried over how we played on Saturday, mentally we looked down,” Rowan said. “We always preach o nto the next and we’re just trying to learn how to overcome adversity now.”
