Isabella DeGroot allowed a few runs in Carle Place’s Game 1 win, but the information she gained was invaluable. As she put her new game plan on display, the results showed.
DeGroot allowed just two hits as top-seeded Carle Place won its third straight county championship after defeating third-seeded Oyster Bay, 13-0, in six innings in Game 2 of the Nassau Class B softball championship series at Farmingdale State on Tuesday.
Ellie Mazur led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single for Oyster Bay (14-8). DeGroot struck out the next two and got a flyout to end the inning.
“I didn’t know what to expect in yesterday’s game,” DeGroot said. “I was able to see they like the inside pitch after yesterday and make key adjustments.”
Alexa Mifsud doubled to bring home Holly Loredo with the game’s first run in the top of the third inning. Mifsud scored on a wild pitch to put Carle Place ahead 2-0.
“It felt like a big cycle,” Mifsud said. “One person starts hitting and passes that energy onto the next person. Before you know it, everyone is hitting.”
Madison Loayza hit a two-out triple in the third, but DeGroot induced a ground ball to escape the inning. DeGroot retired the following nine batters to end the game.
“Bella is a true utility player for us. I needed her to pitch, and she did. Anything I need, she does it,” Carle Place coach Alyssa Allen said. “She’s just calm, cool and collected. I trust her and I knew she was going to get through this game today.”
Isabella Roman, Kylie Grossane and Loredo each had an RBI single in the fifth. Grossane scored on a wild pitch to put Carle Place ahead 7-0.
Roman had an RBI triple in the sixth and Grossane tripled home two runs to extend the lead to 11-0.
Carle Place (11-13) will face the Suffolk champion for the Long Island Class B crown at Martha Avenue Field at 2 p.m. on June 6.
“From where we started the season, this group has made massive progress and that’s really all I can ask for,” Allen said. “We’ve tried to focus on the little goals. I’ve just wanted these girls to play their best and get better. They’ve done that.”
The Frogs won the Long Island championship a season ago but lost in the state semifinal. This time, they are hoping to push their season even further.
“We graduated nine seniors, so with a new team we want to bring everyone that same joy and energy we got last year,” DeGroot said. “We want to get to the same point and then take it even further.”
