Katherine Krayewski got all of it.
The junior shortstop pumped her fist as she rounded first base, having just watched her deep fly ball clear the centerfield fence.
Krayewski’s two-out solo home run broke a tie in the sixth inning of visiting Kings Park’s 8-4 win over Islip in Suffolk League V softball on Tuesday.
“This was an important game for us for playoff seeding and to have a chance to be league champs,” Krayewski said. “It felt great to come through in that moment. This win put us in a really good spot.”
Kings Park clinched a playoff berth and improved to 9-1 overall and 8-0 against league opponents.
Krayewski’s blast gave Kings Park a 5-4 lead. Her teammates kept the momentum going in the seventh.
Kaylee Myung hit a two-out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Stella Roosa’s single to right-centerfield.
“In my previous at-bat, I was dropping my shoulder,” Roosa said. “I finally made an adjustment and I was able to get on top of the ball and drive it. When Kaylee came around and scored, I was so excited.”
Avery Van Schuyler followed with a two-run blast to left-centerfield to extend Kings Park's lead to 8-4.
Roosa entered the circle in the third inning with Kings Park trailing, 4-3. The freshman was lights out. She struck out eight and allowed one hit in five scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
“I’m super impressed by Stella,” coach Nicole Bullis said. “She has been such an awesome addition to the team and she’s holding her own.”
“You see the future of the program in her,” Krayewski said.
Alyssa Muschenick hit a two-run double and Ava Sirico added a two-run single for Islip (6-8, 5-4) in a four-run first inning. Centerfielder Grace Ryan left it all on the field, diving over the short outfield fence on all three of Kings Park’s homers.
Krayewski went 3-for-4, including a two-out single in the fourth that resulted in Hailey Roccisano scoring the tying run on a throwing error. Emma Lombardi hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Myung went 2-for-3.
Kings Park reached the Suffolk Class A final last year, where it lost to eventual state champion Miller Place.
Said Krayewski: “Our goal is just to get back to that spot and hopefully change the outcome.”
